Threats and Missed Opportunities

Spankings involving superheroes and superheroines, non-superhero comic-book stuff, comic strips, jungle girls, Lara Croft, Vampirella, Elvira, etc. Chross' board already has an excellent thread on this, but we love this subject so much we figure it deserves its own forum here anyway.

web-ed wrote:Now to Phil's question: did the Suzie creators want to do more spankings? Suzie (her own title) ran until 1954, the year the Comics Code went into force. I won't give all the citations here, but I have elsewhere expressed my theory that the Code didn't really clamp down on non-parental M/F spankings until 1956 (coincidentally(?) the end of the Golden Age as I date it). That would seem to have left plenty of room for more Suzie spankings, especially from her father.

On the other hand, comics were coming under fire beginning around 1947, and we have seen that the two spankings in Jungle Comics #89 from that year were censored when the story was reprinted five years later in 1952. The last known Suzie spanking (the one we saw last week from issue #83 of her own book) is from 1951 . Therefore it is certainly possible that someone wanted to show Suzie being spanked by her boyfriend Ferdie or some other guy who wasn't her father in the 1952-54 period but the spanking got nixed at some point.

No way to reach a definite conclusion either way, but since Suzie's two known spankings are both supposed to be humorous, I have to think that if another Suzie spanking by her father was ever scripted, it would have been approved. Let's hope there's still one out there somewhere. ;)
Hi web-ed,

Thanks for the information and the speculation on this one. Your level of knowledge about such things is so great that I have a tendency to give even your speculation a lot of thought. Thanks, Phil

I really enjoyed seeing the Suzie collection last week, with the one actual spanking panel, several panels that show her rubbing her backside, and various pratfalls.

Of course, the biggest missed opportunity I see in the Suzie series is her constant juggling of the two boyfriends! I would've loved it if a story had concluded with Ferdie and Gregory taking their turns spanking her!

Now it looks as if, instead of firing Suzie, the boss spanked her and made her get back to work!

Hi Boom,

I definitely like your altered version better :D There's just something that seems right to me about spanking her and then sending her back to work 8-) . This is one of the pics I liked best, BTW. There's just something appealing about this view :D . Thanks, Phil

I understand, I really do, that the creators and editors of "Suzie" wanted to shy away from any toons that would show the beautiful blonde Suzie being spanked... other than the one toon where she is spanked by a young boy (Fauntleroy?) and the other toon where she is spanked by her Dad. But that was 1954! What did the editors have to fear, after that late date?

Smilin' Jack and The Phantom, two other very popular comic strips, had already spanked at least a dozen ladies in the funny papers by then. I don't remember reading about any feminist protest against those stories. Also, Superman supervised the spanking of Queen Arda in 1946. And Superman himself took a misguided young woman over his lap and spanked her during WWII, calling her a "saboteur." There were many, many other comic strips in the early days that showed us men spanking naughty females. You know there were. So why, in the relatively late year of 1954, would Suzie's editor have to fear the wrath of the public by subjecting their main star to repeated spankings... especially since their stock in trade was the regular abuse of Suzie's rear end anyway?

Yes, I realize there is now a thing called feminism, and the women behind that movement are determined to stamp out any mistreatment of women. But spankings are not mistreatment. In the comics and on TV and the movies, they are supposed to be funny... and they are!

Hey B00m - I just got to these now. Thanks for doing all the hard work in presenting them. I think the one with Suzie typing the report while standing due to being spanked is a very ingenious use of the original composition.

Now let me address Dan's question:

The two basic problems, Dan, were that comic strips and comic books were seen as two very different things (they still are today as well, but to a lesser extent), with the latter seen as a children's medium, and that beginning around 1947 they were coming under increasingly intense criticism (and not from feminism, by the way, for this movement didn't really exist yet). This criticism culminated in the creation of the Comics Code Authority in 1954, and the number of non-parental spankings in comic books dropped off, with the 1956-65 period being akin to baseball's "Dead Ball Era" for it was practically dead to spankings.

Image

I tell the whole depressing story in The Effect of the Comics Code on Spanking, a 4-part article I wrote back in 2012. One of comics' chief detractors was Dr. Fredric Wertham, who assailed among many other things what he termed "Erotic Spanking" and "Sexual flagellation upon the buttocks". (It was discovered early on the spanking panel he reprinted in his book Seduction of the Innocent had come from Frontier Romances #1 - follow the link if you can stand reading my lengthy commentary from 2010).

Note that spanking in comic books was under explicit attack, at a time when both juvenile delinquency and sexual perversion were subjects of great concern to parents - a U.S. Senate hearing on comic books was actually held(!) although spanking was not mentioned in the partial transcripts I have read. The publishers were running scared, and the content was clearly affected, for as we know one spanking from Candy was toned down to the point that her boyfriend Ted pictures himself whacking some other guy with a tennis racquet (blechh!) and the two spankings from Kaanga were chopped out completely when these stories were reprinted.

That is what the editor and publisher of Suzie had to worry about - ironically, just as Humorama was discovering the erotic potential in spanking, comics were afraid of that potential being any further realized.

Luckily, the Code's attitude began loosening in 1966, and we began to see comic book spankings again. But Suzie had been gone for 12 years by then - sigh :( .

A Threat and a Missed Opportunity from Mary Worth

Post by web-ed »

I'm updating the two known spankings from Mary Worth this week and next, and just in time to accompany them Sweetspot found a threat and a missed opportunity from the strip. Let's take a look at them now:

1. From September 25, 1945 comes this strip in which Garrett Walker threatens to "paddle something, and it won't be a canoe!" - it will be the fanny of this unnamed young lady :D . This situation reminds me a lot of the spanking from The Saint ("The Golden Journey") where the spoiled brat doesn't want to do her share of the work.
Image

2. Twenty years later came this scene on October 20, 1965. As Sweetspot says, "They tell us she is much to old to spank and then they taunt us with a nice look at her ample certainly not to old to be spanked backside!" The wise pater knows his daughter is never too old to be spanked  !

Thanks for finding these for us all, Phil! :)

HI web-ed,

Yep. There's that element of disappointment that accompanies all missed opportunities  . Of course, we all know that it would have been much more effective to have applied that paddle first, accompanied by the threat of more in the 1945 strip 8-) . In the 1965 strip, a good spanking first, followed by his threats would have, again, been more effective. I think it's his making excuses attitude about spanking her that's caused her to be spoiled anyway. Thanks, Phil

Susie Q. Smith - Heading for More Spankings!

Post by web-ed »

Back in January, we revisited one spanking from Susie Q. Smith and looked at a couple of other scenes in which a spanking very definitely took place, but off-panel. Sweetspot has unearthed some more interesting episodes, so let's take a look at them here.

1. No spanking here; it's more like another case of a "behind in jeopardy" as I like to call them. This one is from January 5, 1959.

Image

Hitting a girl in the butt with a snowball is something many of us have done - I did it in high school  - and it's harmless fun. The interesting thing is that Susie says she's not jealous that her boyfriend, Caz, does this to another girl, even though she takes this as a sign of affection, because she's not the jealous type. It's notable that whacking a girl on the behind should be recognized as affectionate, or at least a sign that a girl has a boy's interest.

2. From December 10, 1951, Susie skates on very thin ice when she declines to do the dishes as her father wishes.

Image
Uh, Susie, how many times have you been spanked by "Popsie" now?

3. This time it's definite: Susie's gonna get the hairbrush, from May 5, 1954:

Image
You'll be howling all right, Susie, and very soon, too  !

Even though I stopped actively looking at Susie Q Smith strips some months ago, when one looks at hundreds of comic pages with 14 to 20 different strips to a page, once in awhile something fortuitists is bound to come up. Susie seems to always live on the edge of receiving discipline from her father so it's always a good idea to have a closer look if it appears that she and dad, early on always referred to as "Popsie", appear to be in confrontational mode.

I can almost promise that dad will be paying a visit to Susie later that evening with hairbrush in hand!

Doing the dishes always seems to be a bone of contention between teenage daughters and their comic strip parents. In one S.Q.S. strip her mother passes out when Susie volunteers to do the dishes. Later this year, I guess, we'll see how the chore of doing the dishes leads to another older teenager being spanked. I suppose showing a stack of dirty dishes was visually appealing to the artist who wanted to convey that a particular chore needed done and done right now. When Ella Cinders complained about the drudgery her step-mother tasked her with, it was often demonstrated to readers by showing her washing the dishes.

I think the "This is my night to howl!" gag is a very good one. Note that Mr. Smith appears to be preparing to spank Susie with his left hand. This is of some note to me because I'm left handed. Because I'm O.C. about this sort of thing you now get of a list of famous left-handed spankers in the strips and comic books. I'm so proud! Roy Rogers, Tarzan, Popeye, Harold Teen (sometimes), Cole Oyl, Hiram Lodge, Superman! (sometimes), Superman's robot, Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, Mammy Yokum, Captain Marvel and Lois Lane.

Hi Phil,

I thought your comments were interesting. web-ed indicated that this strip was done in 1951 and perhaps this was a time of change, that is a time when some parents were becoming more lenient while others were still more strict and required chores were still routine. I graduated in 1967 and dated a girl for my last year in high school whose parents both worked. Not only was she expected to take care of her little brother but she also had to do many of the household chores, including dishes and laundry. Considering that her dad had wooden hairbrush that her bottom was intimately familiar with, I doubt that she would have ever let the dishes get very far behind and she certainly wouldn't have argued about doing them  . Hi Phil!
Thanks for the comments. Your girlfriend learned, and with good reason, not to argue over doing her chores - as onerous as they might seem to her - on the other hand, Susie Q seemed to never learn.

I graduated from high school in 1971 in the midst of the mini-skirt fashion craze. Times were good for the high school boy. I overheard my school-newspaper sponsor/journalism teacher tell some younger girls, "Do you know who Heidi L... is?" [heads nod - Heidi was the head of the spirit squad and a very bright girl] "She gets a spanking if she gets a grade of C or worse." I don't know how that conversation took the turn it did but it's a statement I've never forgotten. The mini-skirt makes the fantasy all the better.

In the last year of the Susie Q. Smith strip (1959) at a time when the Walter's marriage was breaking up, Linda Walter drew a strip that was a variation on the 1951 strip above. I had thought that given the opportunity of a multi-panel strip the Walters would have handled the gag differently. We would have been given "Popsie's" reaction to Susie's blatant disregard for her father' authority, an attitude that often resulted in the older teen-ager being spanked with a hairbrush. In the newer strip [Susie Q. Smith went from single panel to multi-panel in 1953] her father's initial response to Susie's refusal to start her homework, with a declaration that her father can't boss her around, is to contort into a startled, cigar dropping facial expression.
He didn't like his authority challenged and he put high-stock in his daughter doing her homework. On one occasion he literally tied her to her chair with her homework in front of her so she couldn't get to the phone, etc. Certainly we can conclude that Miss Smith was once again soon to find herself across her father's lap being spanked with that hairbrush.

Another interesting one here, Phil, that as you mentioned strongly resembles the 1951 strip. Thanks for digging it up for us :D !

Ah, high school days: girls getting hit in the butt with snowballs, girls getting spanked for "C" grades, girls getting whacked with paddles - mem-or-ies, mem-or-ies...

Actually, mine weren't very good at all, except for the snowball part :D , but we won't dwell on unpleasant things here at CSR; we'll leave them for my as-yet-unwritten novel where they belong! Meanwhile, everyone can rest assured that Phil S. has found lots of other missed opportunities and I had quite a few others in my files already, so we'll be seeing more of them in the future. :)

Hi, Sweetspot. I've really been enjoying your new finds in comic strip spanking!

I didn't know there were that many. I wonder if it's because of the cartoonists being lefties, or if there's another reason.

In my O.T. Katie strip, I made Bullmoose Armstrong lefthanded for compositional reasons at first. (Two women were spanked in one panel and in order to make them face each other, one spanker was a righty and the other was a lefty. After that, I decided to make Bullmoose be permanently lefthanded. I also made Mr. Argyle, Katie's boss at the spy agency a lefty, just so that the lefties would be adequately represented. I think Katie herself is mostly lefthanded, but she switches sometimes. (That's because there are times when she has to face the other way and I just reverse a picture I've already drawn, without making the necessary adjustments.)

Also, one of my favorite movie spankings was done lefthanded. At the end of Frontier Gal, Rod Cameron vigorously applies his left hand to Yvonne Decarlo's gorgeous posterior! Yummmmm!

Hi Hugoboom -

I was revisiting your O.T. Katie cartoons just a few days ago. Thanks for giving me something to smile about. Thanks also for paying attention to the need of diversity in spanking scenes. A left-handed spanker is always welcomed by us southpaws. But! I appreciate a right-handed spanking because from my perspective in the "audience" I can more easily visualize myself sliding my lap under the girl being spanked in front of me. Hope that makes sense.
As you say, I would think that composition has the most to do with a right-handed top being drawn to spank with his left-hand. I agree with web-ed who holds in disdain the cartoonist who ends up allowing the top to spank "with the wrong hand". To paraphrase him - it's OK to spank with the left hand!
Yvonne De Carlo made for a beautiful sight over Rod Cameron's knee. You obviously have great taste in spanking scenarios.

Threats and Missed Opportunities - Alley Oop

Post by web-ed »

Although there is always a certain disappointment in scenes of spanking threats that were never carried out and missed opportunities that were, well, missed, there's a certain amount of fun in them also. Ironically Phil Sweetspot, who has found about 40 of these things during his search for more comic strip spankings, isn't that crazy about them, but he has been good enough to forward them to me so I'm adding them to my own collection of about 30 and will start presenting them over the next few months - at least, that's the plan. We won't have something every week - I can't manage it and I don't want everyone to get tired of the feature - but I hope it will be a regular part of this "Year of the Comic Strip".

I'm going to present them mostly alphabetically except in those cases where I have an actual spanking from the same strip - then we might as well see both together. Accordingly, although there are no further known spankings in Alley Oop (the one known spanking may be found here), let's see this spanking threat from November 15, 1950:

Image
Alley Oop, 11-15-1950. Scan by Sweetspot, touched up by Web-Ed. © Newspaper Enterprise Associates

I interpret the last panel to mean that Oola has slapped Oop or perhaps even slugged him in the eye. This truly was a missed opportunity as well as a threat, for Oola is clearly too rebellious (to the point of physicality) and needs a good spanking to remind her that Oop is the one wearing the pants.

Hi web-ed,

You are indeed correct when you say this was truly a missed opportunity. You speculated that she may have slapped or hit him in the eye but I actually didn't even need that information. Just the fact that he threatened to turn her over and she says she'd like to see him try is sufficient provocation in my estimation  . In any case, she does indeed need a good spanking :D . Thanks, Phil

My interpretation would be that he tried but without any success. Oola evidently got the best of him and socked him in the eye when he attempted to turn her over his knee. I find that hard to swallow considering Alley's physical prowess, at this point in the strip's history, was well established as being exceptional in nature [example given below]. Perhaps he made a playful attempt to spank her and it wasn't well received which caught him off guard and he ultimately decided not to force the issue.

By the way, that girl lurking behind Ooola's back will be spanked in the strip just a few days later.

That's how it looks to me too, Phil. Thanks for including the strip. So that's Princess Zee, soon-to-be-Spankee, in that first panel  - she's got it coming to her.
