Yes, the strip really went downhill in the 60's a 70's. The 40's was probably its heyday (it started in 1937), and I have all the strips from 1937 to the mid-50's or so. I don't know if there were any other spankings after that time (about when Abner and Daisy got married).

October 12, 1949 Gig is ready to give the trouble making Sara over his knee and spank her but is informed that Sara's ex Emmett Jackson is already taking care of punishing the treacherous brat in just that fashion. Meanwhile a fellow named Hilary has assumed a position on a ladder and represents all of us spanking fans who would love to be enjoying the sight of Sara getting switched.

October 13, 1949 Gig wants to have a word with Sara now that she has stopped "screeching" in pain from her spanking. Emmett Jackson has the look of a spanker who has achieved great job satisfaction and has finally been able to rid himself of some inner-demon. Cathy is the name of Gig's daughter. Anyway, looks like a good spanking has been just what's been needed to adjust Sara's ah -world view ;) as she is now wanting to join her spanker wherever it is he is going.

A very interesting plotline, Phil, and timely as well since I decided to turn our attention to Captain Easy next week. :D Since Emmett was Sara's ex-husband, he was entitled to spank her on the bare and I'd certainly like to believe that's why the spanking could not be shown on-panel!

You have to love the straight line delivered by little Cathy: "But Mr. Jackson - won't you feel badly spanking a grown-up lady like Miss Sara?"

Don't worry, Cathy dear - Mr. Jackson won't feel badly at all!

It's also very interesting that Sara is ready to re-unite with her former husband after he spanks her. ;)

Somehow, this one got left out of Li'l Abnerpalooza, so here it is a week late but not, I hope, a dollar short:

Image

I can't remember the plotline clearly after so many years, but Abner has been taken for emaciated singer Freddie McGurgle (probably a parody of Frank Sinatra) or he really is McGurgle - I forget which. He's been starved, which is why he's too weak to resist his fan club here. The spanking threat reminds us that in 1944 teen-agers did not simply run around at will, playing with their iphones at all hours of the day and night - parents could and did spank! :) No actual spanking here even though there were many in the strip.

No doubt I'll be going back to 1944 in the near future to gather the details about the Freddie McGurgle story line in Li'l Abner. But for now let's tie up some lose ends and fill in a few data base blanks. Keeping in mind that we're working in the Department of Threats And Missed Opportunities [DOTAMO] :|

As Web-Ed has posted Daisy is spanked twice in 1943 the first time being 'off-stage' on July 19. At the suggestion of Pansy Yokum, Daisy, who to this point in the strip has always been sweet and patient in her attempts at winning Abner's hand in marriage, has turned to 'caveman' techniques - what could go wrong? - with disastrous results for her bottom.

September 6, 1943. Shows the results of her spanking from Ramrod Ramsbottom of the the previous day. Stars have long been associated with spankings in the funny pages. The oldest examples of spanking produced 'pain stars' I know of are several from 1932. In fact stars appear on the comic page to represent pain to the head, back, elbow - well about any part of the body in fact.

There was little danger of the government censoring newspaper strips at this time, Butch - local pornography laws tended to be rather weak, and the federal government had no power to censor anything except material in the U.S. mail. (Don't get me started on the assumption by the FedGov of powers not granted by the Constitution, but at that time Congress at least had the sense to doubt it had the power to enact general censorship laws). Indeed, the law against sending "obscene" material through the mail was quite severe, and we know that Irving Klaw, who did all that Bettie Page bondage/spanking stuff in the 50's and sold primarily by mail order (he had a shop in NYC which is how he started) lived in great fear of federal prosecution. Ironically, it was the New York State authorities who finally leaned on Klaw (despite what I just wrote about the unlikelihood of state prosecution) and he moved his operation to Jersey City - a fact which makes me chuckle for some reason  . Perhaps it's because I can't decide whether I hate New York or New Jersey more ;) .

Public taste was another matter, and the syndicates would not have wanted to push anything too outrageous that could have cost them readers. Notice that even Bill Ward's Torchy had a rather modest bustline at this time:
Image

But sexual mores had been changing for at least 20 years by 1940, and by the early to mid 50's "Good Girl Art" was a reality, and female comics characters were sexier than ever. (This would be a good subject for a special feature some day, and in fact I've already assembled some "research materials," i.e. sexily-drawn women, for an erudite discussion on what makes comic art erotic 8-) ). Daisy Mae's cup size increased during the 50's in keeping with the new "fashion," although it never really got out of hand.

Here she is in the March 23, 1959 daily strip:

Image

And that reminds me: Phil, I have the Li'l Abner daily strips from 1937-1959, so it's unlikely there are any more spankings during that period if you want to save some time searching. And of course I can supply a good scan of any particular date you might be interested in. There may have been more spanking mentions or missed opportunities - I wouldn't necessarily remember those. In fact, while paging through the 1959 dailies just now, I saw that Moonbeam McSwine gets a really good kick to the behind and I suppose I should scan it. :)

Thanks as always, Phil, for your continuing and excellent strip research :D .

Kerry Drake was always a natural for giving spankings, and I think we can safely say that Senorita Cordova was very lucky to escape a trip over his knee here. That's particularly true considering the name of the airline we see in this panel:

Image
Rojo Air Lines

Yes, that translates as "Red" Air Lines, and Mr. Drake could have been pardoned for concluding that the color of Senorita Cordova's nalgas needed to be turned red also  !

I don't think I've seen David Crane before, but I noticed the artist was Win Mortimer:

Image

Mortimer did some work for DC in the 60's, including one extremely memorable issue of The Brave and The Bold:

Too bad he didn't do an earlier spanking in David Crane ;) .

Moonbeam gets another Boot

This one's about four weeks late but I only found it when looking through some old Li'l Abner strips in preparing an answer to Butch's question (see his earlier post just a little above). Let's see Moonbeam McSwine take another boot to the behind:

Image

Al Capp tended to draw the boot-ee in a bending-over position, which is nice, but in the end these scenes are not interesting enough to go hunting for. There must have been a dozen of them in Li'l Abner during the Kigmy (kick me) plotline alone. Like Phil S., I find them by accident and share them for whatever value they may have.

Spanking Mention in Candy

Posted: Thu Feb 08, 2018 8:20 pm
by web-ed
Long-time CSR readers no doubt remember the four spankings from Harry Sahle's teen-age comedy strip Candy that we posted back in 2010. The best of these was probably this one:
Image
Spanking from Candy #3. Art by Harry Sahle. (Follow link to go to the page on the main site.)

Although the last of Candy's spankings was interesting because of what it revealed about the Comics Code (see my article on the subject for details), as a group they were always lacking. They were paternal rather than romantic, which turns off a lot of people right there, Sahle never laid out the story properly so that the spanking got a big panel for emphasis, and he was very inconsistent in the way he drew her figure (we would want her to be as womanly as possible in the spanking panels). The one time her boyfriend Ted spanked her it was only in his mind, and in a tiny panel-within-a-panel!

But Candy had a comic strip for a while as well as her own book. It was there Chief Strip Researcher Phil S. :ugeek: discovered this delightful scene in which Candy and her schoolmate Ella Mae are discussing a spanking another girl got from her boyfriend:

Image
Candy, May 19, 1948. Scan by Sweetspot. © Chicago Times Syndicate

At Ella Mae's dramatic re-enactment of the spanking, in which she actually brings her open hand down in a spanking motion, Candy sighs, "Isn't he wonderful?"

Now the point here isn't so much that Candy is into erotic spanking, although that could certainly be true. It's a much broader confirmation of the fact that women are attracted to strong men, the kind of men who would dare to turn them over the knee and spank them! You'd never see anything like this today, because political correctness insists that we lie about male and female sexual psychology.

Any other spankings in Candy? I don't know of any in the strip, and Phil S. hasn't discovered any so far, which isn't to say they don't exist. The strip went on until 1950, so there could be something in those last two years, or even in the 1944-48 period.

What about the books? I have checked all the issues of her own title and can say with certainty there's nothing else there except a couple of off-panel spankings (with some nice pain stars) that we will see eventually. But Candy began as a back-up feature in Police Comics. I had thought that there might still be a few issues out, but checking just now it looks like I've gone through all the relevant issues. So unless Candy made a spanking appearance in some other book, it looks like our only remaining hope is the daily strip.

Do you think most women want a man do be more like a father to them or maybe they are into spanking but afraid to let them know about their hidden secret :?: :?: :?:

I think that most of the women who are into spanking are terribly embarrassed about it and for that reason often don't admit it to their boyfriends or husbands. As for being a father to them, I would say generally no, but in some few cases definitely yes. I remember well one spanking ad in the pre-internet days in which a woman, who had been spanked by her father until she was 30, wanted to experience that kind of spanking again. Mostly I think women would prefer to be spanked by a lover, but failing that, probably a disciplinary figure, a role I have personally taken on many times  .

Missed Opportunity in The Ryatts

I can't say I remember The Ryatts very well - domestic comedies were never of that much interest to me. But the strip was around for 40 years, from 1954 to 1994. No actual spankings are yet known, but Chief Strip Researcher Phil S. :ugeek: managed to locate one missed opportunity from 1969.

The father threatens a spanking, figuring one of the children has been tying up the phone all day. When it turns out it was really Mommy, the boy asks with innocent eagerness, "Can I watch you spank her?" We know exactly how he feels  !
