Detective Kerry Drake has been assigned to head up the security detail for the visiting daughter of a Latin American dictator. Chi-Chi Cordova is an ill-tempered, spoiled brat who is also a prankster. August 27, 1957 Kerry has supplied Chi-Chi with a protector alarm [panic button device] a privilege she has abused on several occasions. But this time she has actually been kidnapped by political opponents of her dictator father. September 27, 1959

There was little danger of the government censoring newspaper strips at this time, Butch - local pornography laws tended to be rather weak, and the federal government had no power to censor anything except material in the U.S. mail. (Don't get me started on the assumption by the FedGov of powers not granted by the Constitution, but at that time Congress at least had the sense to doubt it had the power to enact general censorship laws). Indeed, the law against sending "obscene" material through the mail was quite severe, and we know that Irving Klaw, who did all that Bettie Page bondage/spanking stuff in the 50's and sold primarily by mail order (he had a shop in NYC which is how he started) lived in great fear of federal prosecution. Ironically, it was the New York State authorities who finally leaned on Klaw (despite what I just wrote about the unlikelihood of state prosecution) and he moved his operation to Jersey City - a fact which makes me chuckle for some reason . Perhaps it's because I can't decide whether I hate New York or New Jersey more .

Public taste was another matter, and the syndicates would not have wanted to push anything too outrageous that could have cost them readers. Notice that even Bill Ward's Torchy had a rather modest bustline at this time:


But sexual mores had been changing for at least 20 years by 1940, and by the early to mid 50's "Good Girl Art" was a reality, and female comics characters were sexier than ever. (This would be a good subject for a special feature some day, and in fact I've already assembled some "research materials," i.e. sexily-drawn women, for an erudite discussion on what makes comic art erotic ). Daisy Mae's cup size increased during the 50's in keeping with the new "fashion," although it never really got out of hand.

And that reminds me: Phil, I have the Li'l Abner daily strips from 1937-1959, so it's unlikely there are any more spankings during that period if you want to save some time searching. And of course I can supply a good scan of any particular date you might be interested in. There may have been more spanking mentions or missed opportunities - I wouldn't necessarily remember those. In fact, while paging through the 1959 dailies just now, I saw that Moonbeam McSwine gets a really good kick to the behind and I suppose I should scan it.

Kerry Drake was always a natural for giving spankings, and I think we can safely say that Senorita Cordova was very lucky to escape a trip over his knee here. That's particularly true considering the name of the airline we see in this panel:

Yes, that translates as "Red" Air Lines, and Mr. Drake could have been pardoned for concluding that the color of Senorita Cordova's nalgas needed to be turned red also !

I don't think I've seen David Crane before, but I noticed the artist was Win Mortimer:



Mortimer did some work for DC in the 60's, including one extremely memorable issue of The Brave and The Bold:

Too bad he didn't do an earlier spanking in David Crane .

This one's about four weeks late but I only found it when looking through some old Li'l Abner strips in preparing an answer to Butch's question (see his earlier post just a little above). Let's see Moonbeam McSwine take another boot to the behind:

Al Capp tended to draw the boot-ee in a bending-over position, which is nice, but in the end these scenes are not interesting enough to go hunting for. There must have been a dozen of them in Li'l Abner during the Kigmy (kick me) plotline alone. Like Phil S., I find them by accident and share them for whatever value they may have.

Long-time CSR readers no doubt remember the four spankings from Harry Sahle's teen-age comedy strip Candy that we posted back in 2010. The best of these was probably this one:

Although the last of Candy's spankings was interesting because of what it revealed about the Comics Code (see my article on the subject for details), as a group they were always lacking. They were paternal rather than romantic, which turns off a lot of people right there, Sahle never laid out the story properly so that the spanking got a big panel for emphasis, and he was very inconsistent in the way he drew her figure (we would want her to be as womanly as possible in the spanking panels). The one time her boyfriend Ted spanked her it was only in his mind, and in a tiny panel-within-a-panel!

But Candy had a comic strip for a while as well as her own book. It was there Chief Strip Researcher Phil S. discovered this delightful scene in which Candy and her schoolmate Ella Mae are discussing a spanking another girl got from her boyfriend:

At Ella Mae's dramatic re-enactment of the spanking, in which she actually brings her open hand down in a spanking motion, Candy sighs, "Isn't he wonderful?"

Now the point here isn't so much that Candy is into erotic spanking, although that could certainly be true. It's a much broader confirmation of the fact that women are attracted to strong men, the kind of men who would dare to turn them over the knee and spank them! You'd never see anything like this today, because political correctness insists that we lie about male and female sexual psychology.

Any other spankings in Candy? I don't know of any in the strip, and Phil S. hasn't discovered any so far, which isn't to say they don't exist. The strip went on until 1950, so there could be something in those last two years, or even in the 1944-48 period.

What about the books? I have checked all the issues of her own title and can say with certainty there's nothing else there except a couple of off-panel spankings (with some nice pain stars) that we will see eventually. But Candy began as a back-up feature in Police Comics. I had thought that there might still be a few issues out, but checking just now it looks like I've gone through all the relevant issues. So unless Candy made a spanking appearance in some other book, it looks like our only remaining hope is the daily strip.

I think that most of the women who are into spanking are terribly embarrassed about it and for that reason often don't admit it to their boyfriends or husbands. As for being a father to them, I would say generally no, but in some few cases definitely yes. I remember well one spanking ad in the pre-internet days in which a woman, who had been spanked by her father until she was 30, wanted to experience that kind of spanking again. Mostly I think women would prefer to be spanked by a lover, but failing that, probably a disciplinary figure, a role I have personally taken on many times .

I can't say I remember The Ryatts very well - domestic comedies were never of that much interest to me. But the strip was around for 40 years, from 1954 to 1994. No actual spankings are yet known, but Chief Strip Researcher Phil S. managed to locate one missed opportunity from 1969.

The father threatens a spanking, figuring one of the children has been tying up the phone all day. When it turns out it was really Mommy, the boy asks with innocent eagerness, "Can I watch you spank her?" We know exactly how he feels !

Looks like a Blondie and Dagwood set up that Dagwood did not go through with.

This is the oldest daughter Pam who is fearful that her daddy won't take her age into consideration when deciding her punishment. I have a birthday spanking reference pertaining to the other daughter Kit. In that strip she is not shown being spanked but in deference to her age I will only publish that clip with approval from the site administrator.

There is some other Ryatts stuff on the Handprints site, but it is F/F spankings and references involving the mother and daughter, and so will not be presented here. I suppose I should record the spankings that seem to have taken place there, and perhaps I will some day, but they won't be presented on CSR.

I have not seen any spankings of Mrs. Ryatt, unfortunately.

Don't get me started on the stereotyping of blacks in the 20th century funny pages.

Cash and Carrie March 23, 1927 In this storyline Cash and Carrie's mom is away from home attending to other family business. Mom writes Cash a letter reminding her to take care of her sister, Carrie, and keep her out of trouble. Cash sees this as authority to grill her younger sister about her latest boyfriend and to spank her if she isn't forthcoming and honest about her actions. Carrie tells her to spank away implying that big sister will only be getting what information Carrie wants her to have. Side Glances March 24, 1944 At first glance I thought the dad was reaching for his slipper and was determined to spank Dorothy as his response to seeing her poor grade or grades. After reading the caption and looking over the drawing I think what we have here is dad just returning from work; he takes off his jacket, lights his pipe and sits down to put on his slippers and his wife immediately sticks Dorothy's report card in his face. He is angered by what he sees particularly with her math grade Dorothy's mother reminds him that having a good prospect of winning a beauty contest is of equal importance to her math scores. Dorothy has no interest in any of this and is preparing to go out. BUTmy conclusion is that Dorothy will soon be lectured, tugged over dad's lap and spanked hard with one of those slippers [or maybe that shoe in dad's hand] before she leaves - if indeed she is allowed to leave. In my best case scenario mom is also due a spanking for her cavalier attitude towards her daughter's academic performance.

May 21, 1944 Out Our Way Yet another variation on the flyswatter gag that first appeared in 1927 with Will as the sibling bending over to read the newspaper and Lil prepared to swat him. In 1929 Lil is bending over as she is here in this 1944 strip but the joke is completely different. Just like in Blondie, many gags were used over and over again through the long-run of Out Our Way. The earlier gags can be found in Gallery #2 and I wouldn't be surprised someday to discover the flyswatter punchline from a '30s, '50s or even 1960s strip.

Toots and Casper July 18, 1926 - you have to love the classic "flappers" in the second panel. And as we all know, flappers need spankings


Cash and Carrie - a classic missed opportunity as Cash should have called Carrie's bluff and spanked her 'til she talked!

Out Our Way - good to see another variation on that much-used fly-swatter theme even though we didn't get another brother/sister spanking.

Toots and Casper Nov. 11, 1941 - Prescription: spanking! Way to go, doc - another successful diagnosis! Nov. 11 was still called "Armistice Day" at this time, as old-timers will remember.


The Ryatts - "stiff petticoats" indeed! Reminds me of the disappointing "strapping" in the movie Bachelor Flat in which Tuesday Weld asserts she was wearing a rubber girdle . I wish the writer had come up with a better gag. Best of all is when the birthday girl is quite happy to accept her spanking for real, as in those videos I posted last year with the son spanking the mother .

So What? July 14, 1956 - the old "paddled her canoe" gag, which we've encountered many times here at CSR. No question that spanking was implied. An oldie but a goodie - and the stereotypes are really not too bad here, as this is 1956 and the 50's were actually quite a dynamic decade with much social progress despite its reputation. We may well be disappointed that we didn't get to see the spankee perhaps rubbing the affected area.

We will be seeing a much worse stereotypical black maid deliver an unintentional swat to Lena Pry in a week or two, and I found another during last months Golden Age search spanking a cat!
