When
Claire Voyant started on
May 10, 1943, it was very much involved with WWII. The strip was written and illustrated by Jack Sparling [
Hap Hopper artist]. A fogbound Merchant Marine freighter sighted a drifting lifeboat with two occupants, victims of a Nazi torpedo raid.
Claire Voyant September 8, 1947. Claire's friends retell her strange story to Broadway showman Billy Rose. The male occupant of the lifeboat dies after rescue and evidently is deleted from the reimaging of the scene.

Claire Voyant February 25, 1947 Paula is Claire's new roommate she is also the daughter of Hairy Harry who is one of Claire's friends - a big time restaurant owner and 'mobster' who can't stand seeing his friends get hurt. But Paula doesn't know that Harry is her father. He faked his own death [shades of
Hap Hopper] so that Paula could advance in society without the assumed shame of having a less than highfalutin parent. The other blonde is Joy who is married to one of Claire's rescuers, he is now her agent - Angles Touter. Joy is pregnant and so this is the last we see of her until after she gives birth in early September. The tall fellow is soon to be radio comedian Jess Cousins, he's another client of Angles Touter and Claire's friend.

Claire Voyant Febraury 25, 1947. A promising threat. We would like to see another Jack Sparling spanking [
Mr. Rumbles and
Honor Eden]. At this point at least we know that Sparling is thinking in the right direction.

Claire Voyant March 25, 1947 Jess Cousins volunteers to provide 'Hairy' with a 'fine new razor strap' to use on his daughter. A second threat but we've been let down plenty in such situations so it's best to stay calm and oh well we're in the Threats and Miss Opportunities section for a reason.

Claire Voyant April 5, 1947 As in Mel Brook's
The Producers at Claire's suggestion Hairy Harry produces a stage show for his daughter in the hope that it will be a failure and his daughter will get off her high-horse and realize that the stage is not for her. In this case the play
is a failure. Harry goes to Claire and Paula's apartment in the hope that he can reveal himself as Paula's father. After the play flops Paula confronts Claire with her usual bratty attitude. Harry spies a well-placed hairbrush - this is very promising indeed!

Claire Voyant April 9, 1947 Paula slaps Claire. This is going to be a spanking for sure - with her dad ready to put that hairbrush to good use. But at this point, as far as we're concerned it all unravels. Paula turns to leave and grabbing her coat knocks over a lamp that hits her dad in the head and knocks him temporarily out.

Paula returns to the apartment later and overhears that Harry is really her father. All ends well except for us.

Mr. Rumbles October 4, 1955 So no Jack Sparling drawn spanking to add to our collection [which includes, according to Web-Ed, a possible Sparling spanking scene in Sick Magazine]. For now anyway we'll just have to be satisfied with what we already have. Okay, I may not be clairvoyant like Claire but I can safely say I see plenty more spankings in our future at CSR.

Thanks for posting all this stuff, Phil, and taking up the slack when I haven't had time to keep posting "Missed Opportunities" myself.
Claire Voyant had real possibilities, and of course I'm always interested in any more indications that
Jack Sparling was one of us. I'm not sure how long he edited
Sick, but I certainly hope someday to be able to track down all of his issues some day. (And for the curious, since it's been several years since I posted
Sick Spanking here's a nice, new link.
And yet if Sparling were a spanko, would he have so many missed oppoturnities?
Zack Mosley sure didn't miss many spanking opportunities in
Smilin' Jack, that's for sure! The only thing that occurs to me is that Sparling may have wanted to keep his spanko proclivities secret, and you can only have so many spanking scenes in a strip before people start to wonder (see e.g.
Wonder Woman).
We'll have to try to remain objective while waiting for more evidence, once way or another.

These two looks more like a tease meaning they have great build up only for some reason the writer decide to abort the spanking

And now Butch more of the same -
Ah What's The Use August 26, 1922 I know that it's risky for me showing a frame where the male gets the worst of it but let me point out the following 1) I don't care, 2)It's a good gag, 3) It's worth showing that over the history of the strips from Jiggs to Charlie Brown - males almost always get the worst of it. 4) I still don't care.

Apple Mary October 4, 1939 Another case of the father commending the person who threatens or actually spanks his daughter/granddaughter for their action. In this case dad actually offers Mary a job to become the girl's at-home chaperone.

Hi, Sweetspot. Those are some interesting finds.
I notice that the signature on
Dumb Dora is "Chic Young" same as
Blondie. Apparently Mr. Young was not into spanking... even though he drew some very spankable ladies!
In the two
Penny strips, the audience isn't treated to an in frame spanking panel, but they are fun strips anyway!

We didn't get to see the lifeguard spank the girl who faked drowning to get his attention, but I can see it clearly in my mind's eye!

In fact, I can imagine a scenario in which the girl first tried to make him notice her by wearing a very skimpy suit and walking by his platform back and forth. When that failed, she pretended to drown... even though she was a swimming champion in school.
And in the second one, we see the aftermath of a spanking. The pretty blonde girl is reluctant to sit... even with a pillow tied behind her!

(is that Penny herself? I never read that strip.)

More good finds, Phil.

Of course we already knew that Chic Young wasn't particularly into spanking because there were so many missed opportunities for Blondie to be turned OTK. Penny was more interesting, and it's too bad we don't get to see either spanking. Of course the old pillow under the seat gag is used to tell us a spanking took place, and it's quite effective as far as it goes. The problem is it doesn't show the spanking

Invisible Scarlet O'Neil Gets Butted
Posted: Thu May 23, 2019 4:46 pm

Since we're doing a
F/F spanking from
Invisible Scarlet O'Neil this week over on the main site, this seemed a good time to bring this particular episode of
Scarlet to everyone's attention:

From
Famous Funnies #6
The billy goat comes to Scarlet's rescue, but she'll remember his method every time she sits down for a while. Unfortunately, artist Russell Stamm chose a long-distance shot for the money panel, when he should have shown the locomotive missing Scarlet in another panel.
Oddly, the farm boy falls across her lap in almost-OTK position. Scarlet did spank a boy a couple of times and a young woman once (this week's update) - refer to the
Comics Spanking Data Base for details. So far those are all the known spankings although something else could certainly still be out there.

Wilbur Misses an Opportunity
Posted: Thu Sep 05, 2019 1:26 pm
by web-ed
As part of our 2019
Homecoming Week in which we feature high school hijinks, here's one from the Archie-imitator
Wilbur (also published by Archie!). I know I've mentioned
Wilbur before but I don't want to take the time to look that up now. Suffice it to say Wilbur himself takes on the "Archie" role while his girlfriend Linda takes on the parts of "Betty" and "Veronica". Their adventures are pretty much the same as those of the Archie gang, although there's some more slapstick.
Let's see a missed chance for the old "Swat the fly (behind)" gag:

From
Wilbur #80 (September 1958). Script by
Frank Doyle, who wrote at least two spankings for Archie Comics; pencils by
Dan DeCarlo whom we know so well from his Humorama work; inks by
Rudy Lapick.
Encasing Linda's behind in a butterfly net when she bends over is surely embarrassing to her, but no swatter means no swat - rats

We're focusing on
Winnie Winkle this week over on the main site, so to complement that here's a missed opportunity discovered by
CSR Chief Strip Researcher Phil Sweetspot
. I think we can all agree that this girl deserves a good spanking!
