Kind of a mixed message here, Butch. You say the Kevin Karstens drawing is "OK" to you, but then you say it looks creepy. You also wonder: "Where is this guy's hand?" I assume you mean his left (non-spanking) hand. Yeah, that bothered me too... but not as much as the nudity did.

I'm not against tasteful nudity, but I am opposed to pics of a person's private parts. Really, there is no reason why Karsten had to draw the girl's vulva in this picture. It accomplishes nothing except to expose the artist's dirty thoughts. She is already turned over her dad's lap, he is already spanking her bare bottom... so WHAT is accomplished by showing us the girl's genitalia? I've argued this point before on this board, so I guess it's a case of "to each his own." Anyway, you are right: It DOES looks "creepy."

Oh, and I don't know where his left hand is, either. Maybe he stuck it into his pocket.

Thanks for posting those new updates. Guess you were going for a spankings page that is 100 per cent NON-OTK.

Ya know, I'm with you in admiration of those good old spanking cartoons that we used to be able to view routinely in the comics. No such luck, these days... although I do kind of notice a slight lessening of antagonism by the fem-libbers.

Over the years, you and I have seen many, many spanking cartoons in the mainstream media. Every single one that shows an adult female getting spanked is welcome. But the spanking toon that MOST makes my crotch tingle is the one that shows us The Phantom giving Queen Pera her first spanking, followed by Count Jorge of her own staff, giving her her SECOND spanking! Man, that toon is hot! I cannot help admiring it, even today after all these years.

Of course the main reason is that thing that you talked about in your essay: It makes us feel good, to see a haughty woman who's in a superior position (in this case, the queen) get taken down a peg and be humiliated, preferably in front of witnesses. In the "Queen Pera" strip we can see that she is not only in a superior position, she is also so self-absorbed that she thinks she can get any man she wants, from wherever in the world.

As you have pointed out, this particular story of The Phantom was first published in 1946. I think it bore the title "Queen Pera the Perfect."

Now then: It must be a favorite story to a lot of people, because we know that, years after the 1946 original was published, someone in some other country (Asia? Australia? Europe? Dunno) had the entire strip painstakingly COPIED, then published it again. I came by a photocopy of that duplicate sometime in the 1980s, and then I posted it here, to your webpage. But the copied strip was in black & white, whereas the original was in full color.

We know this, because someone on your webpage later posted a full-color copy of the original panel, from 1946, showing Count Jorge spanking the queen. That panel is larger in scope than my b&w copy, and shows more detail.



And yes, thanks to you and your marvelous website, we have also seen a Scandinavian comic that actually DUPLICATES the Phantom/Queen Pera strip, giving us the same story but with the panels re-drawn in a different style, and with speech balloons in the language of that country. (Sweden? Denmark? Iceland??)

The reason I mention any of this, is because I am still wondering if you -- or any of your fellow spankos -- have copies of the original 1946 comic in full color, showing the two panels of The Phantom spanking the queen. Since the panel with Count Jorge, posted above, is available... then I fancy that the two Phantom/Pera panels must ALSO be available. Somewhere.

If so, I'd love to get them into my collection. As you know, I once drew a riff on that The Phantom story, substituting my own creation, Captain Woodshed, in place of that phantom fella. It would be great, if I could lay these old eyes onto a clear copy of those immortal original panels from the original "Queen Pera the Perfect."

Oh, by the way: The first time I saw the Queen Pera story, I suspected it was a rip-off of the Superman strip that shows Evad spanking Queen Arda. But in your invaluable Website, you let us know that it was the other way around. The Phantom's queen-spanking was published some months before the Queen Arda story. Must have been a popular plot in the 1940s.

Thanks for the updates. I especially enjoyed the "pat on the back" cartoon, although I wonder if the caption and the drawing were done by the same artist. The lady's remark seems more fitting to a "one-smacker", while her rubbing hands, the lines (which are usually used to indicate heat) radiating from her backside, and the stern look on the man's face all point toward a more prolonged spanking.

I appreciate seeing a better scan of the Bill Ward "overdraft" cartoon, although Ward seems to have a bit of trouble with the woman's musculature in this one. Because of the position of her legs, her right buttock should be more flexed than the left one, instead of the other way around. She just looks a bit lopsided.

No, I wasn't deliberately trying to do a week of non-OTK spankings, it just came out that way. I'm well aware that OTK is the king of all spanking positions even though it's not my personal favorite. I'm almost out of Doc Cylon's stuff and only had a couple of non-OTK updates to his existing pages to choose from; Dave Carney never used OTK as far as I can remember (nor did he do that many drawings, so his series will have to be rather short); the Bill Ward Bank Teller cartoon was simply next in order of several Ward updates to existing pages. That brings us to the "pat on the back" spanking in the Humorama Series.

I'd been concerned about the number of non-OTK scenes in the series, so I decided to get them out of the way first, allowing us to have a nice run of OTK Humorama cartoons at the end. Expect non-OTK through December, followed by about a dozen more OTK ones, most of which I'm hoping haven't been seen before.

There's no doubt that the Phantom+Jorge/Queen Pera spankings are among the very finest, if not THE finest, ever to appear in the comics medium. They just SIZZLE because they depict a strong woman made to submit to a stronger man. I did an enormous amount of research prior to my "Focus on The Phantom" special, which I believe I ran in April 2011, but I haven't had time to do much since. Also, one of the prime sources of comic strips on the 'net got taken down because of copyright concerns. But while I've established the date it appeared, and there is a generally-accepted index of Phantom Sunday strips, I still don't have a copy of the original color strip. I'm sure I'll be able to pick it up eventually, but like I said, I haven't been searching for it lately since I've been pretty well occupied with the ongoing Golden Age and Humorama searches, plus Wonder Woman (on hold for the moment) and the Silver Age Supergirl (now completed).

As to the timing, this gets trickier. I'm still not sure of the exact date of the Queen Arda spanking in the Superman Sunday strip because I don't have all of them and because no one has yet put together a complete index (as far as I know) the way someone did for the Phantom (the Superman strips are numbered, however, which remains the key to identifying when they appeared). My best information puts the Queen Arda episode in 1946, some time before "Queen Pera the Perfect". I still wouldn't call the Pera scene a rip-off though, because Lee Falk wrote it so well and had probably done the first superhero spanking of any kind with the Phantom/Zagra scene, but it is true that Jerry Siegel gets the credit for being first with the "high-born gets humbled" type scene, especially when we consider that Superman spanked Princess Tania all the way back in 1939! Here's what I had to say about that one:

This delightful plot is noticeably similar to The Phantom Spanks Queen Pera (1946) but appeared almost seven years earlier. The highborn and haughty being taken down a peg is an important and recurring motif in spanking comics, so it is of some interest to identify its earliest appearance, which appears to be here. We'd have to say that Lee Falk probably did it better, but if less technically proficient than Falk, Jerry Siegel was at least as imaginative a writer and for now gets the credit for having been there first. (The earliest superhero spanking is still probably Phantom Spanks Zagra, but that was a pure punishment scene).

i can't say i care much for the exaggerated proportions on the Zatanna drawing. however the bottom is nicely shaped and Doc Cylon did a very nice job of coloring it so i'll quit complaining . in the Dave Carney drawing i'll have to agree with you about the unusual nature of the subject matter. i looked at it for quite a while before deciding i had no idea what was happening................other than a girl about to get a caning that is . i also agree with you about the position of the spankee in the Ward drawing. i do, however, like the expressions and the way the dress is drawn as well as the overall idea of this one . thanks too for the background which i always find interesting . in the "pat on the back" drawing i thought it was too bad that we don't know who the artist is. perhaps that information will yet surface some time. i like the way she's standing rubbing. hard to tell from his expression if he actually will raise his sights in the future or not . more good updates. thanks, phil

Both Butch and Dan pointed out the dearth of scenes with the OTK position last week, and I'm afraid it's slim pickings for OTK fans again this week, namely a new scan of a Bill Ward cartoon plus one OTK photo illustration in a new article. Let me say again this is unintentional; it's just the way things have worked out and if possible, I should probably try to have at least one OTK scene each week. But out of necessity my new "Bad Paddling" article covers mainly problems that often arise while using the bending-over positions, although there is one illustration of the OTK position (the problem with using too long a paddle OTK). I had also slated for this week another rather unique item I found on Jim Linderman's blog Vintage Sleaze some time ago, and in common with a lot of the weird BDSM stuff from the 50's, it doesn't use the OTK position.

Then there's the Humorama Series. As I mentioned last week, I'm trying to get all the non-OTK cartoons out of the way so we can have a nice run of OTK ones at the end. I'm going to do at least two updates to existing Humorama pages for the next few weeks, so there should be at least one OTK scene among them.

The "bottom" line: even though it isn't my personal favorite, I'm well aware that OTK is the king of spanking positions, and if I don't have any OTK material in a given week, it's just the way things have worked out. OTK isn't going anywhere, and neither am I, so just stick around and you're sure to find more OTK stuff on CSR.

You may have made a mistake yourself in the "Paddles" story.

You described the person swinging the paddle as a girl. That "girl" is badly in need of a shave, and not under the armpits! .

I excerpted the video and re-edited it from a longer sequence in which the same spankee we see in the video took one or two swats from another girl. It was only after that time that "Shirtless Joe" as I called him stepped up to the plate and delivered three more very hard swats to the poor spankee. So there were two spankers, first female, then male. We never see the female paddler in the edited version. I regret that I didn't make the narrative clear.

I'm pretty sure that "Tim Holt movie" is Rustlers (1949), in which he spanks Martha Hyer upside down.

Ms. Hyer appeared in several B pictures during the 1940s, then decided to affect the "bleached blonde" look for her work in films of the 1950s and 1960s. It worked well for her, as in those decades she appeared with such stars as Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum, and Jerry Lewis. She was nominated for the Academy Award for her supporting role in Some Came Running (1958).

In a recent message here, I named some actresses who were spanked in films more than once. Martha Hyer fits in that category also. She was spanked twice, both times by Tim Holt, in Thunder Mountain (1947) and Rustlers (1949).

Ms. Hyer was born in 1924, and I believe she is still with us.

thanks for the article on paddling mistakes. i enjoyed reading it and also re reading all about paddles. of course, much of the information you presented was stuff i already knew but it was good to re familiarize myself with all this. your "shirtless joe" from the video obviously didn't have a clue what he was doing and was probably motivated by trying to show off how hard he could swing. he came off as an idiot. a well aimed and well controlled swing using less force would have produced a much more desirable result..............geez! Bivouac showed us Veronica with a well presented and shapely bottom which, of course, Doc Cylon knew exactly how to color . i too am not fond of whips although this "tied over a chair" scene is an interesting one. since the spanker is in bra and panties it kind of makes me wonder just what is going on here...............or why? this is not exactly the kind of scene i like to see but it's still intriguing. in the Bill Ward trip spanking i like the spankee's reaction. i love the disbelief on her face . her kicking seems to be quite animated and that along with the contorted position of her hands indicates that she's really feeling the spanking . thanks for the information about the first appearance of this cartoon. the position in the Barkley drawing is not only unorthodox but also impractical . still, i enjoyed the gag and also your speculation about how this one came about . good updates again. thanks, phil
