Re: Back To School - Post Holiday Edition
Oh, wow - there's nothing like paddling ! I love these scenes, and isn't it interesting that newspapers employed artists to dramatize these scenes where there were no photographs? Those three girls in the last one look like they won't be late to school again any time soon! And for those who don't know, repeated "tardies" were indeed grounds for paddling students in at least some districts I've heard about.
My plan is to start presenting our combined newspaper spankings once the Comic Strip Series has concluded.

I agree the pictures used to illustrate a newsworthy spanking are great stuff. I look forward to finding more and more of these beauties on the main site

Either that or everyone else is on stage while the third girl is poking her head up through a trapdoor! Yes, the composition is peculiar. I think the artist wanted to depict all three girls with tears in their eyes, but found he didn't have room for a third body in a small panel, so he "solved" the problem by simply showing her head! I don't know if he thought it would be taken for expressionism, but since realism was the normal mode for newspaper art if he did his hope was probably in vain.willjohn wrote:What is with the head on the floor? It would be interesting to know what contemporary readers thought about the drawing.
