Iron bark wood is extremely hard and is resistant to fire and water damage. It's been mostly used by shipbuilders, but it has a lot of other uses. I read about a pedal steel player who had an instrument made out of iron bark wood because it doesn't expand and contract as much with changes in temperature, or warp with the string tension.
While Katie and Bullmoose were in Australia, Kaylyn inherited the antique hairbrush that had belonged to "Dizzie" Lizzie McGill, and Katie needed a new one for herself. They bought one made of iron bark wood. Katie uses it on her hair, and sometimes Bullmoose uses it on her backside. Bullmoose bought a full-sized paddle made out of iron bark too, but he only uses that for more extreme punishments.
If someone wants a durable wood that's grown in North America, there's rock maple and ash. If they want something harder than that, they'll get iron bark eucalyptus from Australia.
