Jane Spanking #2

---> Comics Gallery 2

Our next example comes from the British comic strip Jane which we have seen once before in this gallery (Jane The War Years). This second spanking seems to be some years later, from 1948 (the war years having passed), and was located by Sweetspot but not using his usual methods: he found it on some fetish site but because he was ill at the time was later unable to recall the exact details and we haven't been able to find the site either. A tip of the cap to our unknown benefactor who first posted this scene on the web.

As we observed in Jane's first appearance, she had a great tendency to lose her clothes. Before going on to the spanking, let's take a look at Jane in the buff, for educational/historical purposes only. wink

So Jane certainly had a spankable bottom, and appears topless in the last panel. If this was from the 1940's or '50's, it's a little more than we would see in an American comic strip, but we don't think the charge that America was a puritanical nation regarding sex really holds up (we use the past tense because it would be ludicrous to make that charge against contemporary America). Bare bottoms were seen in American cartoons going back to the late 40's, although in the earliest spanking cartoons (1954-55) the spankee was shown wearing cami-knickers. (We'll have more to say about that in future articles regarding cartoons as opposed to comics).

But it's true you wouldn't have seen an adult female bare bottom in American comics of the period (lingerie was acceptable and quite common with characters like Katy Keene who changed clothes a lot and often wore reader-designed fashions). The fact is the British were more accepting of nudity in popular media than we Yanks were: we remember being quite surprised in the early to mid-70's by the occasional topless models that appeared on British television programs like Monty Python's Flying Circus and the nearly-full nudity on I, Claudius. They seemed to have no problem with spanking either, so let's see Jane's second go-around with it now.

We may assume that Jane is being spanked for sufficient cause, and she definitely makes a good spankee. The OTK positioning is good and Jane is wearing a lovely expression (bearing in mind the way she looked getting into that bathtub we wish that's all she was wearing laughing face). The art is by Michael Hubbard who had been Norman Pett's assistant and who took over the strip when Pett went over to the Dispatch earlier that year (Jane appeared in The Daily Mirror).

Two questions remain: were there any other spankings in Jane, which ran for another 10 years until 1959; and were there any in Susie, which Pett created for the Dispatch? We don't have the answers yet, but we'll keep looking.
