Route 66 (1926-1985, or U.S. Highway 66, to remove any ambiguity) has been an American legend for some time. It ran from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California - a 2448-mile route. Older CSR readers might remember the Nat Cole song of the same name written by Bobby Troup ("Get your kicks on Route 66!"), and surely everyone remembers the spanking from the TV series we posted in 2014. Given its fame, it was probably inevitable that some wag would come up with a "Route 69" parody in one medium or another, the numeral "69" being a well-known sexual graffito (Al Capp used to sneak it into Li'l Abner now and again).

Our wags here are WC Pope and of course Doctor Cylon. Pope is primarily a caricaturist but is so prolific and has such a wide-ranging talent that he has also done portraits and illustrations, worked for the U.S.A.F, and produced some girlie cartoons. No "spankers" but no matter - Doc Cylon is here to help! Pope may have intended to imply that you'll find this Hooters girl along Route 69, metaphorically speaking - Doctor Cylon comes right out and says she's like from spanksville, cats!

We couldn't find Pope's original art, but it's clear that the good Doctor did quite a job on the coloring, especially the red on our possibly well-travelled young lady's bottom.

There is no more official U.S. 66 sad face, it having been replaced by various Interstate highways, although the old roads are still there and in some cases marked as "66" by state routing systems or historical markers.
