Little Annie's Classic Fanny

We've discussed Playboy's old comic strip Little Annie Fanny elsewhere, particularly in Little Annie's Fanny Spanked which spanking took place in the strip, and more recently in Plumber's Curse where Doctor Cylon embellished one of Julius Zimmerman's many pieces featuring Annie. Zimmerman must have really liked the character to have taken her as his subject so many times, and we'll see a short series of them now in the Good Doctor's gallery.

"Classic" (Zimmerman's title) is really a homage both to Annie as drawn by Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder, and to another Playboy artist, Alberto Vargas (1896-1982).

Vargas produced a fully-painted "Vargas Girl" for every issue of Playboy over a period of sixteen years, resuming a feature that had begun in Esquire magazine years earlier (see example below). Zimmerman here suppresses his own style, something he did rarely and only for certain comics characters, in favor of rendering Annie much as Kurtzman and Elder did, with the oversize boobs for once being someone else's idea, but then he added a pose and background that remind us more of Vargas than the other two artists. (The technique used by Kurtzman & Elder on Annie was complicated, involving painting just as Vargas did, but with oil, tempera, and water colours done by Elder and some assistants over Kurtzman's rough sketches).

Enter Doctor Cylon. He had the unenviable task of preserving all that Zimmerman (and by extension Kurtzman, Elder, and Vargas) had done while enhancing the work with color. We think he succeeded spectacularly, so much so that we don't even miss the blushing behind he ordinarily provides us with.
