John David Clothing Ad |

Alan (Ahonda) has been a long-time contributor to CSR, concentrating mainly on spankings in comics, but we continue our mini-series of his latest contributions now with an ad that appeared in the New York Times. It is somewhat reminiscent of the classic Chase & Sanborn ad in that a displeased husband, upset with his wife's failure to purchase the advertised product, turns her over his knee! It does seem rather playful here with the wife laughing at her predicament, but it is surely significant that the ad agency perceived wife-spanking as generally acceptable and did not worry in the least that some noisy malcontents were going to tell us all how "offended" they were. We conclude that this was a better era, and indeed it was (1951 to be exact). We are still four years away from the first known OTK spanking humor cartoons (1954-55), but of couse by this time there had been many husband/wife spankings in comic strips and movies. (Some other time we'll explore the question of why it took humor cartoons as long as it did to "catch up" in the spanking sense.)
Out of curiosity, we consulted a reference source of defunct American retailers to see what
happened to the John David chain which apparently consisted of seven stores in Manhattan (see
the bottom of the page), but they weren't listed. Perhaps they were bought out later or were
impacted by the garment theft ring which as we remember it was victimizing the Manhattan garment
district some years later. At any event, John David will now achieve a kind of immortality with
this webpage turning up on search engines as long as CSR
exists |
