Your Snuffy Smith gag comes from a date much later than I thought it would. I found it the newspapers of 1991.

When you first notified your eager public that you had a Snuffy Smith post I assumed you meant the one below. I thought I had either already published it in the Forum or I had sent it to you. But neither of those options turned out to be the case.

First, thank you Phil S. for providing us with yet another new and exciting strip discovery ! I did not know of the 2nd Loweezy/Jughaid spanking and I don't believe you sent it to me (there's still a pile of emails I'm trying to catch up on). It really should be indexed next to the first one, which looks impossible from the current layout. The best I can do is get it posted as soon as possible, which means May. I haven't got the May updates planned yet, but I intend to concentrate on your material so that if I have to temporarily suspend the Comic Strip Series over the summer due to the great difficulty I'm having in doing more than one update per week, at least we'd have gotten through most of your material. (I am referring somewhat obliquely here to Super-Spanking Summer and how difficult it would be from me to run the two simultaneously, even though I did it last year). We'll just have to wait and see - I'd certainly love to make two updates per week the norm around here, but I'm still worn down to a frazzle. There are months-old posts on this board I haven't gotten to yet, and I've been too tired to run FTP (to do this week's updates) until just now even though I had them completed yesterday morning .

Yes, we're pushing 1700 web pages now, making CSR one of the biggest spanking sites around. In fact, we must be one of the biggest non-spanking sites around because who but a dedicated spanko would need so many pages? I'm proud but also terrified that one of these days the HTML standards authorities will decide that a new version of HTML does not have to be backward-compatible, forcing me to renovate over 1700 pages . Readers will recall that I struggled mightily early in the year just to divide the old Picture Gallery into Art, Newspaper, Photos, and Stage Screen Television galleries, which involved about 200 pages or less than 1/8 of the total.

What quick observations do these numbers suggest? The Comics and Humor galleries dominate, but Doctor Cylon is not far behind and is going to catch up to them as soon as I can finish sorting all his material and start posting it. I'd like to do some more fiction but can't even remember now how much more material I might have just from Mike D. and Leilani. I need a youthful assistant - a Web-Ed Jr. - but it's going to be pretty hard to find a tech-savvy young spanko who's willing to work for nothing!

On the positive side, despite all the obstacles - the critical loss of the services of both Phil O. and Phil S. due to ill-health (leaving B00m and myself more overworked than ever), the gallery renovations, the complete crash of my equally-overworked computer - CSR has persevered. Weekly updates continued and we've even had 1 1/2 special features (the second part of "A Tribute to Bending Over" being probably a few weeks from completion), and now Phil S. has returned - hoorah !

Third, this week's update: we begin a new mini-series on the British strip The Gambols. Most of the material we're going to see came from Phil K., although I did find some on my own and so did Andre (including two F/M scenes we won't be seeing here but I'll have to describe them when I put them in the DB). In our first episode, Gaye learns that a big mouth can lead to a sore behind!

I admire all the hard work you put into maintaining this site. Some of what you do seems very daunting... especially to someone as non-tech-savvy as I am.

I enjoyed this one. The artist doesn't draw Gaye Gambol to be exactly sexy, but she is rather cute. I'm glad that you included the rest of the strip so that we can see why she left the chairman's office with those stars and rays around her bottom.

I don't usually prefer off-panel spankings... but sometimes there is an advantage in leaving certain things to the readers' imagination. Did the boss use a paddle or his hand? Did she bend over the desk or did he turn her over his knee? Did he raise her short skirt or leave her fully covered? We can each envision Ms. Gambol getting spanked the way we prefer.

Another thing I noticed about this strip is that the two opening panels appear to be taking place in the company cafeteria. It was nice of the boss to wait until after lunch before he called her into his office, so that she could sit down and eat first. I wonder if she went home that day and had her supper standing up?

This first of The Gambol's post is new to me, greatly appreciated and somewhat puzzling. A daily with five standard size panels would be highly unusual either in England or in the United States [by mid 20th century anyway]. I believe therefore that this was most likely published in the Daily Express Sunday edition. So we can reasonably narrow down the year of publication to 1957, 1963, 1968, 1974 or a slime possibility that it went to press in 1985. Given the nature of the gag, the fact that Gaye is wearing a mini-skirt, her friends hairstyle and that the women are in uniforms - reminiscent of the shop girls in the British sitcom Are you being served? - I would lean towards 1968 or 1974 but most likely the former. Then too this could be two dailies clipped, edited and placed together. If the scene in the company cafeteria is from one day, then that's not much of a gag now is it? If the visit to the chairman's office is also a separate gag it comes without explanation to readers who missed the build up. Okay, the idea that we're looking at two strips is possible but not probable, even though the panels come in two different sizes. If it is a single Sunday strip we seem to be missing a few frames. Hugoboom concludes that Gaye is called into the bosses office on the afternoon of the day after the 'meeting'. That's plausible of course, another theory is that emboldened by the praise of her co-worker she takes her complaint to the next level with unwelcomed results. Her appearance going into the office is of a woman who has something she wants to get off her mind but not a lady who thinks the boss is going to be congratulating her for her mid-meeting rants. The chairman spanks her, perhaps feeling justified if her took her remarks as personal insults. Anyway since we seem to be missing the continuity between cafeteria and chairman's office the exact details will remain a mystery. The important thing is, of course, that a pretty girl in a mini-skirt got spanked and the boss probably got away with it. Such is life in the funny pages.

First, I don't have the answer to the mystery CSR Chief Strip Researcher Phil S. pointed out, namely, the unusual structure of the Gambols strip we saw last time (Gambols spanking #1). However, I do have a clue in that Gambols #3, which we'll see next week, was scanned in both horizontal (standard daily strip) and vertical (Sunday strip) formats. It may not be much, but it's all we've got, and it suggests to me that someone took the daily strip and re-formatted it. Therefore, they may just as easily have done the same with Spanking #1.

This week our feature is The Gambols #2: Gaye defies her husband by wearing a too-short mini-skirt and pays the price! .

Still far "behind" in everything but I won't quit trying to catch up. See you all next time!

In the next two panels, Gaye is erect and we see that the hem of that same skirt ends a few inches above her knees. That's not correct.

The date in the first panel is somewhat indistinct, and miniskirts were definitely a '60s phenomenon, so I'd say 1966.

Since the name "mini-skirt" isn't coined until 1962 we can eliminate the year 1956 as the original date of publication. Also, it's my understanding that Dobs Appleby didn't start to receive on-panel credit until the 1960s. Blowing-up my own copy [by way of Andre] of this strip I was still unable to get a clear look at the year of copyright but my best guess would be 1966.

This spanking image and the panels leading up to it are among my favorites of all spanking related material from the comics. Appleby wasn't much for drawing background but at least he gave George a chair to sit in while spanking his wife.

I noticed that myself, Dan, but as I had no explanation I kept quiet about it. Barry Appleby's formal art training consisted, I believe, of a rather short course in cartooning. He was a good artist, but not up there with the best, and this mistake could have been due to faulty technique when it came to the problem of clothes draped on the human body or just not thinking enough about the hem.

Well, here we are at the last update for April already! It's time to begin thinking about Super Spanking Summer (for me, anyway, as I prefer to map out the updates weeks ahead of time), but first we need to conclude our current series on The Gambols. That will take place last week, and I hope to be a little better rested then . As it is, I'm late with this week's update due to fatigue (it must be Saturday in Australia by now - sorry, Willjohn!) so let's get to it:

The Comic Strip Series continues with the third in a mini-series on the British strip The Gambols: Gaye gets spanked for buying too many hats - sound psychology .

I also have a clue to the mystery Phil S. raised last week regarding Spanking #1: I present three versions of Spanking #3, one of which is a vertical one (two rows of two panels each) that was plainly derived from the linear daily strip.

Once again I have had no time to see what else is going on this board or what's new in my mailbox. I'll do the best I can to catch up, and if absolutely necessary I'll put the Comic Strip Series on hiatus during Super-Spanking Summer, although my preference (especially in this anniversary year) would be to run them both at the same time. Perhaps I'll have more to say on this in two or three weeks.

I don't know a lot about the Gambols. Apparently there weren't a lot of U.S. papers that ran that strip.

I made the same point in writing this week's copy, B00m - great minds think alike, I guess. It was indeed Dobs, the female half of the Appleby couple, who thought up all the reasons for Gaye getting spanked! Another fine example of female writers who realize that the female's proper place is over the male's knee.
