A while back, SpankBoss posted some stills from the 1980 porn flick Coed Fever on The Spanking Blog, one of the few remaining spanking sites that's been around longer than CSR and one of the very few we bother keeping up with. One particular detail struck a chord in the ol' Web-Ed's monumental memory: the girls were using platform tennis paddles instead of of anything resembling the standard 22" by 3 1/2" models (inherited from early fraternities) in what appeared to be a sorority paddling scene. It was, in fact, the only scene from the film that stuck in our memory after all these years (wonder why? )

So how came we to be viewing porno movies back in 1980? Of course we were much younger then, but even so we never really cared for vanilla porn (not enough spanking as a general rule, although it was sometimes enlivened by unexpected humor) and generally only indulged with a friend of ours, whom we had provided with a "decoding" device (it altered the vertical sync rate of the video signal - without it you got only a jumbled picture) that allowed us to view a certain "scrambled" "adult" TV station in Chicago that, incredibly, broadcast its wares over the air. Coed Fever was one of many such films we wasted Friday or Saturday night viewing.

Nowadays we can't even imagine watching a vanilla porno flick - life is too short. But Coed Fever did have that paddling scene, and both SpankBoss and I were able to locate it. The director understood nothing about proper paddling, and had the pledges walking aroung the room at first (the hum in the background is supposed to be from vibrators used on them). Fortunately, the actresses seem to have improvised a little, and some pledges do get lined up and slightly bent over for swats from the more eager sisters. Probably 35-40 whacks are given in all.

Annette Haven was one of the better-known (and better-looking) women in porn flicks, and she had some acting talent. Here she plays the head of the sorority.

Platform tennis paddles are applied, somewhat ineptly, to the bottoms of the ill-positioned sorority pledges.

The paddle is drawn back just before a swat is applied. Like all platform tennis paddles, these had holes, but they were small and the swats weren't delivered too hard so the "pledges" were o.k.

Younger viewers, spoiled by the easy availability of spanking on the internet these past twenty years (including some sorority paddling-themed stuff) will probably shrug and say, "Is that what you old guys thought was hot back then?"

And the answer is: yes and no. We (spankos) were certainly aware of the shortcomings in a scene like this - haphazard positioning, ridiculous dialogue, clumsy staging, ludicrous scoring, and worst of all, inept paddling - but with no internet and only a few crappy spanking mags available, a movie in which real paddles were actually applied to some female bare bottoms certainly grabbed our attention. Some other pluses: both the pledges and the sisters were naked or nearly so and were played by pretty good-looking actresses (now in their sixties - sob!), and there is some after-swat rubbing that just might be genuine.

It must be tough to be a porn director and have to cast all those supporting roles.... If it were our job, the screen test for this movie would include the girl's ability to take swats from one of the paddles that was going to be used on-screen - the right actress for the right part, and all that.
