There aren't any more groups that call themselves Puritan anymore, but there are sure some people who want to spoil everyone else's fun.

Canadian Thanksgiving seems to have been inspired by the American one, although without the tradition of the first Thanksgiving meal between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. About those Puritans: we should understand that there was a difference between those who were technically separatists, that is, who desired to completely separate from the English Puritans, came over on the Mayflower, and were later called the Pilgrims, and the later Puritans who arrived here some years after that. It was the latter group that waged war on the Indians, hanged people for witchcraft, and were generally joyless and intolerant as portrayed so memorably by Nathaniel Hawthorne in works like The Scarlet Letter and Young Goodman Brown. They had a definite streak of utopianism in them, dangerous then as now.

Now maybe there was something in Puritanism that lent itself to being transformed from a reform movement into a strict, top-down operation (like modern Big Government), but I think it's important to remember that those early Pilgrims were basically good people, and that their idea of a congregation as a voluntary covenant among themselves may have been one of the reasons the notion that government should also be a voluntary covenant, existing only by the consent of those governed, took hold here in America. Indeed, we might wonder if it was that which allowed us to successfully implement (for a time, anyway) a government that existed to protect the rights of the people and not to rule them - a concept of British origin that was never implemented in Britain itself!

But that question, along with a comparison of Britain's three most successful former colonies, America, Canada, and Australia, will have to wait for another day. I hope everyone can be with their families today (another American Thanksgiving Day tradition).

There is some confusion about those two groups, because they started out with a lot of the same beliefs at first. And the name "Puritan" was applied to them by outsiders, not themselves. Some of them were "Separatists" who wanted to leave the Church of England behind and live according to their understanding of Christian principles. Others wanted to take over the Church of England, overthrow the Monarchy. and run everything their way. Some of them wanted to live their lives without persecution. Others wanted to take the place of the persecutors.

Most of my family (the ones still alive, that is) live in another state. I'm going to have a quiet day at home with my wife. and probably eat dinner at one of the few restaurants that will be open.

I'm planning to bring Agent Burns back.

It won't be immediate, because I have three Christmas-themed stories that will take up most of December.

Also... I haven't decided for sure if I'm going to have him come back as a ghost. or cook up some plot that he and Argyle perpetrated so that he could fake his death and do a deep undercover mission. At the moment, I'm leaning towards a faked death. It's more deceptive... which is more in keeping with his nature. Although Katie has a talent for making ghostly hands feel corporeal!

And another thing... When he makes his comeback... solid or spectral... He's going to want a really good reason (at least in his own mind) to immediately turn his favorite female agent over his knee! I haven't figured that one out yet... but I will.

Wonderful to hear that agent Burns will live again. Don't get me wrong, this character is a bad person. However, the more evil and despicable the character becomes the more interest they engender. Just ask any female why they prefer bad boys, and they will tell you that they excite them. Characters that appear boring, will not keep the readers attention as much as the more underhand individuals.
