Supergirl Spanking Search (now completed)

---> Comics Gallery 1

supergirl from action comics #286

The classic miniskirted outfit, from Action Comics #286. Art by Jim Mooney. "Dialogue" by Web-Ed. Supergirl is © DC Comics Inc.

[Web-Ed's note: this search was commenced in March 2011 and concluded in January 2012].

Several times we've referred to a Superman/Supergirl spanking in an actual comic book as "The Holy Grail" of comic book spanking (see the CSR Forum here). There have long been rumors of its existence, but the consensus view (which we're part of) is that it doesn't really exist, and that people are simply misremembering the Lois Lane spanks Supergirl Robot scene in Lois Lane #20. Still, if it did exist it would almost certainly be the most sensational comic-book spanking of all time, so we decided it was worth trying to settle the matter once and for all.

We thought this search could be undertaken at reasonable time and expense. Why? If the Holy Grail did exist, it seemed to us it would most likely have taken place early during Supergirl's run in Action Comics, her principal bailiwick during those years. She was still a teen-ager, making it more likely that Superman would have turned her OTK then rather than later when she had become a student at Stanhope College. And since we had a large number of those issues in our collection, they could be eliminated at once without even re-reading them (if there had been any spankings, we would have remembered, as indeed we did with Action #363 where, alas, Supergirl gives instead of receives a spanking).

Of course, there were other titles in which Supergirl would occasionally guest star, but we really couldn't imagine her getting spanked in, say, Adventure (where she appeared with the Legion of Super-Heroes before kicking them out and taking over the book as the lead feature in issue #381) or World's Finest, which featured Superman/Batman team-ups. Given the Supergirl robot spanking and the various attempted super-tot spankings, anything was possible in Lois Lane, but it seemed unlikely that Supergirl had appeared often in the other "Superman Family" titles, so we weren't too worried about them even though they would all have to be checked. However, as you can see from the summary table below, we underestimated this aspect of the search.

There were other factors to consider as well. In society, spanking was slowly becoming less acceptable, and even at DC became less common as the 1950's receded into the past. The DC personnel involved were also crucial: Mort Weisinger, as editor of the "Superman Family" titles obviously had no problem with spanking in general (although he didn't seem to want Superman as the spanker), nor did Otto Binder, who wrote at least sixteen spanking scenes(!) and probably more. Taking everything into account, we decided to limit our search from Supergirl's debut in 1959 through the end of 1969 - a period of almost eleven years that covers all her Silver Age appearances. Since we followed DC comics pretty closely from 1970 to Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985, we don't believe that a Supergirl spanking during that period would have escaped our notice even in the unlikely event there had been one at such a late date. (DC was still spankin' away during the 70's, but we think only with weird M/M stuff like Jor-El/Superman (1971) and Creeper/Street Punk (exact year unknown).

With the aid of Darkmark's Supergirl Index, we created the tables below to track the search. They will be updated as the search progresses until it has been completed. We could have created a data base, much like our Comics Spanking Data Base, but that would have taken a lot more time and effort. If there are any dedicated comics spanking scholars out there who would like to make a coordinated search of, say, all of DC's Silver Age comics, please write to us and we'll consider setting up a DB so that everyone can see it and authorized users can update it with their information on specific issues.

02/10/2012 Update: our search is now concluded, sadly without finding any Supergirl spankings. This was no surprise, as mentioned above, and it was never likely that we would find our "Holy Grail" when the Knights of the Round Table had failed to find theirs. As a matter of fact, we expanded our search into the Bronze Age to cover all of Supergirl's appearances in Adventure Comics after she had kicked out The Legion of Super-Heroes in #381 (#381 - 424) and all we found for our trouble was an alien Father/Son scene in #410. (Her appearances with the Legion are covered by the search through Adventure #380). We discovered three new spankings during the search, all of them previously unknown in the spanking scene and all of them terrible: another Lois Lane/Super-Tot (attempted) scene in Lois Lane #39; Bizarro Lois/Bizarro Jr. (attempted) in Superman #150; and the all-male Superman Revenge Squad spanking the Jr. Squad OTK with electric rods in Jimmy Olsen #70 - yechh!

The greatest chance we had, let us emphasize again, was during her long run in Action Comics - it was there she was introduced as Superman's young cousin, and without any parents (they were believed to have perished with Argo City during those years), Superman could and did exercise quasi-parental authority over her. There were many missed opportunities there and in some other books as well. Let's visit a few of them now:

  • Lois Lane #14 – Supergirl’s high-handed interference causes problems for Superman and Lois. Supes does teach her a lesson, but not the way we wanted. There was a spanking in this issue, but not of Supergirl - it was the Superman Robot/Lois one ("Three Nights in the Fortress"). Maybe if Otto Binder had gotten the assignment instead of Jerry Siegel..!
  • Action #275, Adventure #278 – Supergirl goes to live with the Kents (twice). Jonathan Kent made numerous attempts to spank Superboy, but didn’t even try here.
  • Action #314 - the Danvers try to drive Supergirl away for her own good by pretending to be upset with her. Edna even calls her a "spoiled brat".  Fred should have spanked her!
  • Brave and the Bold #63 - Supergirl becomes a slacker, deciding to chuck it all for glamour and romance. Superman sends Wonder Woman to change her mind - a fine opportunity for WW to give Supergirl a "growing up" spanking! Then WW fails, becoming a giddy schoolgirl herself when some French roué kisses her. When Supes caught up with both of them, it should have been double-spanking time!
supergirl mouthing off to superman

Supergirl mouths off, but it's only an April Fool story. © DC Comics Inc.

  • Superman #145 – April Fool’s Day story in which Supergirl reveals her existence to the world (which was secret in those years) in defiance of Superman's instructions. Her bad attitude should have been met with a firm spanking! Supes crosses his arms to appear strict while lecturing her, but he would have looked more like an authority figure if he weren't still wearing his Clark Kent pants.
supergirl makes a boo-boo

  • Jimmy Olsen #48 - Supergirl carelessly leaves her fingerprints on one of Jimmy's souvenirs. The Superman Emergency Squad saves her bacon. "Oh, did I pull a boo-boo!" she admits. Here's how the dialogue should have proceeded from there:

SQUAD LEADER: Yes, you certainly did. Your carelessness could have ruined all of Superman's plans. You will report to me in my office in Kandor for disciplinary action.

    SUPERGIRL: Yes, sir.

(Later, in the squad leader's Kandor office, Supergirl is required to stand facing the side of his desk.)

SQUAD LEADER (holding the traditional paddle): Kara Zor-El, for failing in your official duties as Superman's assistant on Earth, you shall receive the form of Kryptonian discipline traditional for girls of your age. Raise your skirt, lower your panties, and bend over the desk.

SUPERGIRL: Yes, sir. (receives first whack) OUCH!!

And finally, because we couldn't stand the frustration any longer, here's our version of what the Holy Grail of superhero spanking might have looked like had it really existed. Long overdue, it brings a smile to our lips even though it's a fake.

Supergirl Silver-Age Spanking Search - Progress Summary (Last Updated 02/03/2012)
Title Number of Appearances Number Checked for Spankings Spankings Comments
Action 125   125   0   Search completed. This title was our best chance, particularly in the early issues, because Supergirl was clearly under Superman's quasi-parental authority.
Adventure 21   21   0   Search completed.
Brave and the Bold 1   1   0   Search completed. Good opportunity wasted when Supergirl becomes a slacker and Superman sends Wonder Woman to straighten her out. Then WW starts goofing off too, so Supes should have spanked them both!
Superboy 1   1   0   Search completed.
Superman 18   18   1   Search completed. Bizarro Lois tries to spank Bizarro Jr. in #140.
Jimmy Olsen 18 18   1   Search completed. Surprisingly large number of Supergirl appearances in this, the worst of all the Superman Family titles. Superman Revenge Squad spanks the Jr. Squad in #70 with electric rods! Not what we wanted to see.
Lois Lane 10 10   2   Search completed. Superman robot spanks Lois in #14. Lois attempts to spank her super-son Larry in #39.
Wonder Woman 1 1   0   Search completed.
World's Finest 5 5   0   Search completed. Team-ups of Superman & Batman, so it was never a very likely source of spankings.
Totals 200 200   4   100% complete.

And for those of you who are as detail-obsessed as we are, here is a complete list of the relevant (contains Supergirl) issues of each title, including the source we used to check it:
