cover of military comics #34

Cover of Military Comics #34 (November 1944). "Beautiful and dangerous Eve Rice crosses the path of Blackhawk!". Indeed she does, and she winds up over his knee! Art by Al Bryant.

I've mentioned Blackhawk a few times on the CSR Bulletin Board, starting I think back in 2010, at first lamenting that a strip featuring so many spankable bad girls (as well as Lady Blackhawk during the strip's years at DC) had seemingly neglected to show any of them getting spanked. Later, after an unknown party posted the spanking panel we're going to see here, I complained that I couldn't nail down where it came from and I didn't want to post it until I knew its precise origin. This was probably eight or ten years ago, and recently someone - either Robin or Alan (I apologize for having lost my notes on this) - sent me the relevant information, and we now know the spanking came from Military Comics #34 (November 1944). Thanks to whoever it was, and to Snard for doing the scans (he's a comics buff but not a spanko like us).

Part of my problem was not recognizing the artwork of Al Bryant. I knew the artist who drew the spanking panel certainly wasn't Bill Ward, who had drawn the book until Military Comics #31, and because I thought I had searched all the issues Blackhawk had appeared in from the Quality years, I then wasted a lot of time with B & W reprints of the post-1956 DC issues. (Quality sold Blackhawk to DC as they went out of business and the Golden Age came to an end).

Our story begins with spankee-to-be Eve Rice sending the Blackhawks a cryptic message warning them that the Japanese have located their secret base of operations and are planning to destroy it. Deciding that the best defense is a good offense, the Blackhawks take to the skies to await the Japanese planes.

Having caught them by surprise, the Blackhawks rout the Japanese with the timely assistance of an unknown flier who follows them back to their base.

By the way, notice that the Blackhawks are often drawn without their hats (Blackhawk's falls off in panel 2, stays off in panels 3-4, and is in his hand in panels 5 and 7! The reason is simple: drawing these hats properly on the head was actually quite difficult, and even Bill Ward, a very good draftsman, had trouble with doing so and sometimes looked for excuses to show the Blackhawks hatless. Evidently Al Bryant felt the same way.

We like to think that Blackhawk got a few spanks in before Chuck advises him to remove his cap.

They quickly discover that the flier is Eve Rice, and when she tells them that it was she who alerted the Japanese to their base's location, Blackhawk boils over - and takes Eve over his knee!

The spanking panel. Posted by the Web-Ed on 04/10/2023.

Overall, I consider this a rather disappointing scene considering the set-up and the fact that Blackhawk, as the leader of a squadron of tough men, should be a natural spanker. The OTK positioning is all right, but Eve's bulky flight suit de-emphasizes the target area, and the gag with Chuck telling Blackhawk he should remove his hat when spanking a lady (o.k. with me as long as he then goes ahead with the fanny-whacking) leads into a lame semi-romantic encounter. How much more sizzling the scene would have been if Eve was put in a submissive mood by a long, thorough spanking! As it is I have to stretch a point to call this an actual spanking at all (there is some ambiguity in that Blackhawk might have gotten a few spanks in before Chuck grabs his wrist).

We have to wonder what this spanking panel would have looked like had the story been scripted a few issues earlier when Bill Ward was still on the strip.
