No one can say that Popeye (Thimble Theatre) didn't have enough spankings - eighteen are now known with probably more to be discovered (17 are documented in the Data Base and we have a crude scan of #18) - although many of them tend to be on the weird side. So it is with the latest, discovered by CSR Chief Strip Researcher Sweetspot, in which Popeye spanks Alice the Goon. (The Goons are a strange race found on Goon Island, and Alice is in fact their leader).

This spanking scene is so odd it almost defies description, but then that was E.C. Segar. He was an excellent cartoonist, and he was still doing the strip at this time although it's near the conclusion of his run (which was ended by illness and his premature death in 1938). That Popeye comforts Alice after spanking her is a nice touch, although neither he nor we can really understand what she's saying (only Wimpy understood the Goon language).
