Let's see a little more now of Meriem, Budd Root's celebrated cave girl (she's really more of a jungle girl in
pre-historic times), and in fact we're going to see quite a lot more of her than we have recently! This time
we see her at her best - without any clothes
It's time to talk about the artist Bud Root. We consider him one of the foremost practitioners of what used to be
called Good Girl Art, a term first applied to Golden Age comics artists such as Matt Baker (whom we've seen with
Skygirl Bends Over and the spanking in
Teen-Age Romances #3). And that brings us to the general subject of eroticism in comics art, about which we were going to write an article
but never did. We have at least assembled some erotic source materials, but then we were always diligent when it
came to research So what's the difference between, say, Root and Baker on the one hand and Milton Caniff and Will Eisner (two very influential comics artists) on the other? A more complete answer will have to wait on that yet-unwritten article, but for now we can point to anatomy and how that anatomy is positioned (this should be formally considered as a part of composition, but you get the idea). Basically, the female anatomy (mostly T & A) is subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) emphasized and then positioned provocatively, as for example with Skygirl constantly bending over so we can appreciate her buttocks and Meriem either doing that (as we'll see in the future) or more commonly something else. Here she raises her arms up and back to thrust her bosom outward while managing to push her backside out as well. It's more difficult to do these poses than you might think, but Root generally pulls it off (along with Meriem's clothes) as we will see as we continue this series. |
