![]() Art by Bill Cellers. From the October 1959 issue of Gaze. Posted by the Web-Ed on 06/12/2020 (Click to double-size). |
We couldn't remember ever seeing a cartoon by Bill Cellers before when we ran across this one, but we later confirmed he had done at least one other work for Humorama. His style is hard to describe - it looks somewhat old-fashioned but isn't really reminiscent of any one other cartoonist we can think of. The spankee here is drawn with short buttocks but the OTK positioning is pretty good. The gag - neighbors getting to witness one of the spankings they've only heard behind closed doors before because it's summer now - strangely has nothing much to do with the apparent cause of the spanking, namely spilled lemonade. And witnesses are not generally present in Humorama spanking cartoons, one example being Dan DeCarlo's Secretary Spanking #11. The suggestion that both men and women like to see a M/F spanking is interesting as well as unique among Humorama's "spankers" as far as we can remember. We can't explain why we have never seen this cartoon reprinted; most of the "classic" Humorama cartoons appeared four times. Is it possible that we've missed all the printings except this one (the original, from the October 1959 issue of GAZE), or that it was never reprinted for some reason? There are certainly more mostly-reprint issues from the post-1960 period that we have never seen (we don't know exactly how many) than there are from 1955-60 (only about five), so we can't be sure. |
![]() Original art by Bill Cellers that we believe was printed in an unknown Humorama digest (click to double-size). |
Here is the only other Humorama cartoon from Cellars we could find. Believed to be from the same era as the "spanker" above, it's not spanking or even a girlie-based theme. Was this a typical Cellers piece? |
