We have seen spankings done in the over-the-shoulder position before, mainly on stage (as for
example in Kiss Me Kate), but it's pure staging convenience (and not very convenient
at that) and of course nowhere near as practical as over-the-knee. Since there's no particular
advantage of over-the-shoulder to the artist (it can't be any easier to draw than OTK), we're
not sure what made Bill Ward think of using it here. Was he looking for alternative
positions, having already done so many spankings in both the OTK and bending-over positions
or did the idea of a fireman as the spanker start his imagination going? Whatever it was,
we think Ward deserves a lot of credit on the score of pure imagination, and the use of
the flat side of the fireman's axe as a paddle was clever also.
Note that we say "clever" and "imaginative," not "practical". It's possible to spank
over-the-shoulder, sure, but there's no advantage to it if you're not directing a play
in which the set offers no place for the spanker to sit down and take the spankee OTK.
And the flat side of an axe makes an even more awkward spanking paddle than that of a sword.
And the gag is pretty much incomprehensible. On the plus side, Ward drew a nice round bottom
on the spankee, surrounded by "stinging effect" lines that make it clear she's feeling those
rather awkward strokes. This is overall a very unique spanking cartoon, and the last one
of Ward's that we have discovered (not the last one he did) from his long career at Humorama.
