a humorama magazine

Humorama was a part of Martin Goodman's small publishing empire, which also included Marvel (a/k/a Timely, a/k/a Atlas) Comics. Edited during its prime years by his brother Abe, Humorama (1938 - 1981) published first digest-sized and later full-sized magazines of pin-up photos, short text pieces, and cartoons. It's the cartoons that are of greatest interest to us here at CSR, because there were at least 210 of them that featured spanking, far more than in any comparable line of humor digests, and there were a few rival publishers of these kinds of books during their early years, particularly Charlton's Good Humor.

We knew of only one Humorama cover gallery, created as part of an ongoing research project by BIP Comics, but it is incomplete with small scans so we decided to start our own here. The gallery is separated by title; to be taken directly to a particular sub-gallery click on the desired title in the list below, otherwise you can simply scroll down through all of them. How many were published remains unknown, but during the peak years there were 10 or even 12 bi-monthly titles, which comes to 72 issues per year. Around 1961, new cartoon material was largely replaced by reprints of the old cartoons in the files, although some new cartoons were still published, at least in the 1970's. We're still researching this question. Some information about each specific title is presented when available.

Humorama Digests for Sale: Some of these original digests are available for purchase on ebay. Follow this link to find them.

Click on each thumbnail to see the full-sized version. Known spanking issues are marked, but be advised that since we did not have actual copies of all the digests pictured here, some of the "non-spanking" issues could in fact feature spankings.

This gallery opened in February 2012. It will be updated as we obtain new cover scans.

Breezy may well be the oldest of the major titles, going back to the 1920's along with Whiz-Bang when it was known as Breezy Stories and featured stories but not cartoons. Humorama did not pick up the title until 1954, publishing it for approximately ten years through 1963. It was then revived during 1969 - 1973, during at least a part of which time it was a full-sized magazine.

Discovered in 2013, almost nothing is known about this title except that it could not have continued for very long. It may have been seen as a sort of revival of the earlier Cartoon Parade with an altered title.

Comedy was an early digest, beginning we believe some time in 1941 (though the earliest cover scan dates from 1942) and continuing until 1964 or '65.

Only six issues of Eye need concern us, all of which came out in 1960. The digest had existed before this, but consisted of celebrity-related stuff. In 1960 it switched to the familiar Humorama format of pin-ups and cartoons. Not to be confused with the British publication also named Eye, which as it happens had some spanking material on at least one occasion! (September 1967, long after Humorama's Eye was closed).

Funhouse (a/k/a Funhouse Comedy) seems to have had two periods: 1964-1972 and 1978-1982 (these dates are still being adjusted as more issues come to light). We'd guess that 1972 was the last year for the digest format at Humorama and that Funhouse Comedy did not make the cut at that time, only to be revived as Funhouse in full-sized magazine format in 1978. Of interest to us here is that Funhouse is one of the few Humorama publications that featured new cartoons (along with reprints) after the pivotal year of 1960, including new spanking cartoons from Bill Wenzel.

Gaze (1955 - 1972) - There are believed to be 92 issues of this title, which began just as Humorama was reaching its artistic peak. It seems to have begun with Vol. 1 #5 (Dec. 1955), but we don't trust Humorama's numbering system - it's quite possible Abe Goodman got something wrong, or Martin Goodman tried to make one book look like the continuation of another, or that publishing information was simply lost. There may be a few gaps in publishing also, for instance between Aug. 1959 and Feb. 1960, where no issues have been discovered. Despite its seeming emphasis on girlie pictures over cartoons, a number of issues did feature "spankers".

Jest goes back to the early 1930's, but it didn't become a Humorama publication until July 1941. It seems to have been in continuous publication for 25 years until 1965, by which time Humorama was cutting back and running mainly reprinted material.

Joker was among the first of Humorama's publications to see print, going back we believe to 1938 although we haven't seen any cover scans prior to 1941. The Spring 1942 issue was printed as Vol. 1 #1, but we do not consider that to be definitive - Martin Goodman may have had some reason for this numbering that no one could possibly know today. It may have been Humorama's longest-running publication, surviving a format change in 1973 to a full-size magazine, in which form it continued until at least 1976.
