This was to have been Part 3 of our three-part series on the work of Frank Beaven. However, as we studied this cartoon more carefully (it has no signature and we always questioned its authorship), we concluded it was actually the work of Stanley Rayon. Rayon is less well-known than the Humorama "Big Five" as we call them (Ward, Wenzel, Stiles, DeCarlo, and Homer), but not less than Beaven. For the first time ever, we almost made a mistake! So how did this come about? Rayon seems to have been heavily influenced by Beaven - note the man's nose and feet, and the woman's relatively small pointed nose - with perhaps Wenzel as a secondary influence. It makes a certain amount of sense since the Humorama line was around for a long time, and in its latter years new cartoonists must have come in who were influenced by the guys who arrived early on (or contributed to non-Humorama men's magazines), in the 1940's or 50's. Perhaps Rayon came after Beaven. We're not sure about that because we have seen one of Rayon's non-spanking cartoons that dates back to 1957, and while we think Beaven's Humorama debut occurred no later than 1953, we can't be sure on this point. This spanking features good OTK positioning and a sexy secretary spankee with an attractive seat that is just a little on the short side. What she did to deserve this treatment is a mystery (it was probably that old standby, spelling errors), but if we find a copy of the cartoon with an intact caption, we'll let you know. |
