I'm still on "vacation" this week but I do have a new Sweetspot scan, this time of Steve Roper Spanking #1 as The Comic Strip Series returns .

Before anyone gets the idea that I'm taking a lot of time off, I should clarify that I haven't been continuously on vacation - I started one a week ago but had to return to Chicago after only three days. Fortunately, thanks to good weather I was able to head back north and am busy kayaking (or as I like to call it, "paddling" ) again. All together it will probably add up to something like two weeks, and of course I'm working every day, both on CSR and on some other things. I did pack another paddle - not the kind used for kayaking - just in case it was needed, but I haven't had the opportunity to use it as I can't exactly advertise my identity as the Web-Ed while I'm here. Still, it's a good feeling knowing I have a paddle handy "just in case" .

O.K., now that we're back to comic strips, what can we expect during the next couple of months? Even though I'd like to end the series with one of Chief Strip Researcher Phil. S's new discoveries, I think it's more important to get them out there so he gets full credit. After all, it's been almost two years(!) since he sent me the first of them and we began planning the Comic Strip Series. So after next week, I'll try to alternate updates to existing pages (such as the two Steve Roper scenes this week and next) with all-new, never-before-seen comic spankings. There's also some independent art featuring strip characters such as a nice Dagwood/Blondie scene and of course some more Missed Opportunities.

The best of these are two of Phil's, but I do have some contributions of my own including spankings from two very well-known strips. My only concern will be that it certainly seems the series will continue to the end of the year, and as we get into the holiday season I don't want anyone to miss any great new stuff because it's such a busy time, so I'll probably schedule updates to existing pages during that period.

I haven't had time to keep up with this board, but I'll catch up when I can.

Steve Roper May 9, 1948. An apology of sorts . As Web-Ed said some of this material I discovered about two years ago and has been, for the most part, out of sight and out of mind. Two years ago I wouldn't have looked at the CSR page on this spanking and thought anything about looking back a day to see if the Sunday edition carried a further panel of interest. But looking at it within the last, I'd say, ten minutes I realized that something had to be missing since a jump from the scene at the lake to a girl being over Steve's knees in the very next panel seemed very not funny pages like. Sure enough I just now located another iteration of this spanking. Yes, I am a little upset with myself only because it means that Web-Ed might feel the need to go back and place this new scan in the main-site gallery. Hate to add even more work to his obviously busy schedule. I can only plead it was a rookie mistake at the time.

i always found this spanking to be amazing. As he dunks her and then spanks her, but it does not look like she has a hair out of place and her bathing suit is not wet either as getting a wet spanking would make her bottom a little more shaped shall we say. Hi, Web-ed. I haven't logged in for a while, so I'm commenting on two weeks' worth of your weekly updates. And, they're both from Steve Roper, which my local newspaper didn't carry when I was growing up.

The two are similar in some ways, since they both feature young women who have done something "naughty" to earn a punishment... but there's also a touch of eroticism to the two spankings.

In the first, Mickey gets a preview of the "hot seat" on the seat of her tight jeans. She looks young and acts childish, but she's got some grown-up curves... let's just say she's an immature eighteen-year-old.

In the second, it looks like a rich-bitch heiress finally got what she had been needing for most of her life. The naughtiness is clearly there, and the eroticism is minimally concealed. Of course, we wouldn't have seen a bare-bottom spanking in a newspaper comic strip of the 1950s, but a spanking in a wet swimsuit is about the closest that could be shown! The audience got to see the tantalizing curve of her buttocks, and she surely felt the impact of Mr. Nomad's palm! (And, I have no doubt that, although he was ostensibly "punishing" a naughty girl. Mike could appreciate the feel of her backside against his hand too!)

Wow! This is a great new discovery!

Note the resemblance to the spanking scene in the movie version of Kiss Me Kate in which Fred spanks Lilli as the curtain falls.

Yes, I did notice the similarity. And in 1957, this is after the Kiss Me, Kate movie came out. About eight years after Kiss Me, Kate was first performed on stage. I'm thinking that the Kiss Me. Kate spanking may have been the inspiration for the writer of this strip.

It's a shame the artist chose to show the spanking so far into the background, while showing a close-up of some anonymous audience members. (Why?) In spite of the small scale and minimal detail, he does manage to show a delectable curve to the spankee's buttocks!

Seeing an on-stage spanking in this comic makes me wonder... Was this a thing before Kiss Me, Kate came along? It seems to me that being spanked on stage in front of a laughing audience would be quite the humiliating experience for a vain and haughty actress!

Yes, and the subject was explained, at length, in the "Vanilla Spankings" section. I don't have it in front of me right now, but it seems the Shakespearean actor John Barrymore played the lead role in a play entitled "My Dear Children" which premiered in 1939. In this role, Barrymore gave a vigorous spanking to the actress playing his grown-up daughter. Her name was, I believe, Doris Dudley.

Some time we'll have to delve more deeply into this question, although I believe most or all of the spankings on stage have already been documented. I supposed there could be some failed plays with nice spankings that closed after one week, but it will sure be difficult to ferret these out. Successful plays that have then been taken up by amateur groups are far more likely to become known.

I worked hard this past month to go through over 5000 pages, mostly of romance comics, and not one spanking ! I discussed the possible reasons for this distressing lacuna last time so I won't repeat it all here, but I will say again it is certainly disheartening to go through that many Golden Age comics without a single spanking. Let me instead explain why I'm spending that much time on the Golden Age search when I've got at least two years' worth of updates already sitting around in the files (I still don't have a final count on the new Doctor Cylon material so it could be more than that).

The problem is that 600 comic books in digital form just sitting around month after month were taking up an awful lot of space, say 25 GB, and worse, taking up a lot of extra time every time I have to back them up, say twice a week. Having cut that down to 400 books helps, but I'll try to keep up the pace at least until I've gotten through the romance stuff.

I'd rather be doing more updates, opening the mail box, catching up with the latest on this board, replacing the Picture Gallery, and conspiring with Sweetspot to bring you all more comic and newspaper spankings, but this has to be done. And if you've written me, hang in there - I'm now going through everything chronologically, which is what I should have done before, so I'll get to your email eventually.
