Threats and Missed Opportunities

Spankings involving superheroes and superheroines, non-superhero comic-book stuff, comic strips, jungle girls, Lara Croft, Vampirella, Elvira, etc. Chross' board already has an excellent thread on this, but we love this subject so much we figure it deserves its own forum here anyway.

More Pratfalls

Post by web-ed »

butch46163@yahoo.com wrote: Fri Jan 10, 2025 2:42 pm nice finds! only wish those pain stars came from spankings
Agreed, Butch! Now, here are five more pratfalls with pain stars we wish had been from spankings:

Image
From Dotty Dripple #14. Holly of Hollywood takes 23 pratfalls(!) of which only one is shown.

Image
From Green Hornet #8 - the Blonde Bomber lands "in a most un-ladylike manner" inside a German submarine, and has some very choice words. She should have been spanked for using bad language!

Image
From Love Diary #4 - notice the rubbing in panel 4.

Image
I think this is from Lucy Real Gone Girl #3 - not a title we've run into before - and it looks like Lucy is trying to shed some weight. A better approach would be to go on a diet and have one of those boys spank her every time she goes off it. I used to do that with Sweet Tooth and it worked pretty well! :)

Image
And finally we have the Blackhawks from Military Comics #20. There were a lot of women in the strip who should have been spanked, but it only happened twice as far as we know (one of them was 14 issues later in Military Comics #34). This time, a female pilot wants to join the Blackhawks, which is a pretty crazy idea, and winds up with a sore bottom for her trouble. Why Blackhawk didn't spank her we'll never understand. :(

Mopsy Goes Flopsy!

Post by web-ed »

Four more pratfalls now all taken by Mopsy, a character created by Gladys Parker whom I believe we've seen a time or two before although she was never actually spanked as far as I know. Mopsy fell on her poor butt so often the first two examples are actually taken from the same comic, namely TV Teens #13:

Image
Mopsy looks very smart in her new riding outfit, but when she's thrown from her horse she quickly decides a Merry-Go-Round is a lot safer. Notice that Parker uses both traditional pain stars and some lightning-shaped effect lines to indicate that it's Mopsy's rear end that's smart(ing) now.

Image
This one isn't very realistic: an ill-equipped Mopsy goes mountain climbing to reach Point Pleasant, and after falling down all the way from a mountain ridge onto her fanny, decides it's more pleasant, not to mention safer(?!) to parachute in. Wouldn't it have been easier to simply choose a more sensible destination?

We'll see some ice-skating in a moment, but first Mopsy tried skiing, with predictable results:
Image

Later that same issue (but possibly a different character - I didn't keep detailed notes on this since it wasn't a spanking) we have a positional missed opportunity instead of a pratfall as our heroine bends over to search a garbage can. Somebody bring us a paddle quick!
Image
From Mopsy #5 (March 1949). Scans by TitansFan; edits by D. Miles.

Image
Finally, we have that old ice-skating gag from Mopsy #16, although attaching a skate to her rear end is a fresh approach.

Yet More Pratfalls

Post by web-ed »

We're getting near the end of my stock of these, mostly set aside years ago during my endless search for more comics spankings, but I have a few left. Let's start with Blue Beetle #54 (March 1948). We'll see the cover first, which was typical of Victor Fox comics in being highly suggestive for the 40's, with a woman undressing in front of a mirror:

Image
Notice that her back is completely bare (what happened to her bra straps?). Her bosom, although not large, is emphasized positionally, while fine lines outline her behind. This was the sort of thing that was driving Fredric Wertham nuts at the time and led to his notorious book Seduction of the Innocent. They even have the story title "The Vanishing Nude" on the cover - no wonder juvenile delinquency was rampant!

So with that in mind (the cover, not just her behind!) let's take a look at page 8, where girl reporter Joan chases some crooks into a funhouse. Even though the place is apparently closed, someone must have left the door unlocked and the skirt-blower on because Joan gets her skirt blown up and then takes a pratfall as she falls through the second trap door we've seen on the page! Isn't that a building code violation?

Image
Joan gets her skirt blown up and her rear end plunked down on the floor in Blue Beetle 54 - hey, we rhymed! By the way, Fox had 12 spankings in their comics, which proves that although they may have been a small, seedy publisher, their hearts were in the right place.

Next we move over to Quality Comics, which had a lot more spankings than Fox (82 to be exact, according to the CSR Comics Spanking Data Base) and Modern Comics #58. It will be remembered that this was the post-war, re-titled Military Comics, from which we saw a pratfall in Blackhawk earlier this month. This time, the feature is Cherry and Choo-Choo, about two career girls trying to make their way through life. Cherry (in the blue dress) takes a pratfall in the first panel and then rubs her sore behind in the second:
Image

The writer hadn't spared Choo-choo, however, for her backside contacts the hard ice fourteen issues earlier in Modern Comics #44:
Image
Obviously Cherry and Choo-choo should both have been spanked, preferably in the same story, but it never happened.

Last and least we have Ozzie and Babs #5 (Oct. 1948) - silly teen-age hi-jinks:

Last Pratfalls, at Least for Now

Post by web-ed »

Let's start with a silly scene from a strip that probably should have been called Prehistoric Pete. It's from Red Seal #20:

Image
This is probably the worst-executed pratfall we've ever seen here :x .

Slightly better is this dog-walking scene from Scooter (a Golden Age book, not the later one from DC) where we at least have two panels of pain stars for the blonde girl's butt:
Image

Now let's return to teen humor, beginning with Candy who did get spanked in her own title three times (the best one being in Candy #3), and seen here falling on her butt in Police Comics #62:
Image

Harvey's answer to Archie was called Mazie, but it was her boyfriend Stevie who was modeled on Archie Andrews. From Stevie #6 we see her rival Jeanie (who was apparently an exchange student from France) take a nice pratfall when Flat-Top (the Reggie Mantle character) pulls her chair away. Mazie and Stevie are visible in the panel also. The "plot" is that the girls are fed up with the boys' lack of gallantry.

Image

Finally we have two scenes from Sunny in issues 12 and 14 respectively. I think we've seen Sunny before; there was a lot of slapstick in her book. What's most noticeable are her pointy, prominent "headlights" as they were called at the time according to Fredric Wertham, although Sunny lands on her taillights here:

Babs's Behind in Jeopardy

Post by web-ed »

Ozzie and Babs was one of those teen-age humor strips that featured a lot of slapstick comedy, and we've seen it recently with a silly roller-coaster scene (see the post of Jan. 30 above). The scene we're going to look at now comes from Master Comics #114, and the story involves Babs and the girls going shopping for some western-style apparel.

In the first page, Babs decides to get on the mechanical horse for some reason, and her rival, the scheming Glitter, turns up the speed control, causing Babs's butt to absorb a good deal of punishment from the horse's saddle. Babs's friend Midge tries to turn the machine off, but the handle breaks off and now the pain stars are under her behind when she takes a pratfall. The horse throws Babs (more pain stars) and she winds up in the bending over position with her rear end up in the air getting poked by some spurs and yet more pain stars around it!

Image

Let's see - that was five panels of pain stars! But we're not done yet, because a saddle quickly falls on Midge's head and Babs herself soon follows, falling fanny-first on Midge with yet more pain stars around MIdge's head and Babs's butt (two more panels):

Image

They were really laying the slapstick on thickly, but after this they completely lost it with a sequence so stupid I've removed out of a sense of editorial responsibility. The writer was inexcusably ignorant about the safe handling of firearms, because he had Midge accidentally shooting Babs with a shotgun - in the butt, of course. This just isn't funny, and someone should have said, "Look, our audience is kids - we don't want them to think shotguns are toys". That was why the villains in the Batman animated series of 1992 always used machine guns - Warner did not want kids to see any commonly-used firearms in the show and try to replicate the scenes at home.

I hope that doesn't sound like virtue-signaling, but such ignorance and irresponsibility really irritates me. Anyway, apart from that this sequence is remarkable for the sheer number of assaults on Bab's poor posterior, with seven panels of butt-pain stars shown plus the eighth I didn't show - wow! :o This is probably a record for the most butt-pain in a single comic-book story. (And to ask the obvious question: couldn't we have had a nice sorority paddling scene involving these girls instead?)

More Behinds in Jeopardy from Four Animals and a Golfball!

Post by web-ed »

Nothing ground-breaking here, but they are butt-busting in their own way. First up is a romance that gets a proper start on a golf course when a man gives a woman a stinging behind (but not with a spanking, alas):

Image
Idea Romance #5 (August 1954)

Penny Aunty (an obvious play on penny ante) is unfamiliar, and it doesn't look like we've been missing much, but here she gets butted by a charging bull and then poked in the behind by a farmer's pitchfork - that's what we call a bad day, not to mention a bad comic.

Image
From Star Comics Vol. 1 #4

Image

We've seen Lena Pry before on CSR - if I remember correctly, there are four (maybe five) spankings from her strip in Comics Gallery 2 - but here she unwisely bends over in front of a billy goat:

Image
From Famous Funnies #28.

By now, I'm sure we're all tired of seeing skinny old women getting butted, so here's a fat old woman getting butted! This one's from a Li'l Abner imitation called Cranberry Boggs that also seems to borrow heavily from Apple Mary in character design:

Last (for now) of the Butting

Post by web-ed »

Let's clear out my "Butting" files with these offerings, which include some pratfalls as well.

First with her butt up is Dixie Dugan. We might have seen this one before, but let's go ahead anyway. Dixie unwisely bends over right in front of a billy goat:

Image
From Big Shot Comics #24

Then we have two pages of Bill Ward's Torchy Todd, who doesn't exactly bend over but still gets it in the end and takes a pratfall as well. I don't know if the artwork here is by Ward or by Gil Fox:
Image

Image
From Modern Comics #76

Then Mopsy, whom we've seen twice recently, follows in Torchy's footsteps, getting butted by a bull and then taking a pratfall:

Image
From Mopsy #1

Then she goes skiing in the mountains and somehow winds up landing butt-first on a cactus plant in the desert. This one makes no sense to me, but here it is:

Image
Also from Mopsy #1

Then it's back to Harry Sahle's Candy to see Candy and Ted's antagonist Cornelia getting butted by another billy goat. Sahle's art never fails to disappoint, but at least we know Corny must have gotten it pretty good.

Image
From Police Comics #98

Lastly we have three pages of an exceptionally silly strip that was apparently called Molly Muddle. Molly seems convinced she can fly, although the boys are doubtful, and to keep up the illusion that she can, her friend Taffy resorts to giving her a lot of pain where she sits down. First, she gets Molly to bend over in front of a raging bull (just like Torchy and Mopsy):

Image
Taffy induces Molly to bend over, with predictable results. Molly says that "it hurts," the first reference to the butt-pain she gets in this sequence.

In the next scene, Molly re-creates the first scene, the most significant feature of which was that she was bending over, which she does again in front of some reporters(!):

Image
Molly bends over once again, and this time Taffy sticks her with a pin, which somehow nobody sees. "I can't let her down, no matter how much it hurts!" Taffy thinks. Of course, it's not Taffy that it's going to hurt - what a pal! This is the second reference to Molly's butt-pain.

Finally, Molly and Taffy appear to have been hired to do an ice-skating routine, and they take (yes) - a pratfall! At least this time Taffy is rubbing her own sore behind for once, but Molly has the last word in the final panel as she exclaims, "I neve want to sit down for the rest of my life!" This is the third reference to the pain in her rear end, which by now must be considerable, in this preposterous story. Couldn't poor Molly have just been paddled repeatedly? Not only would we have enjoyed it more, Molly's behind would probably have been less sore than after all this silliness.

Behinds in Jeopardy from Pins and Needles

Post by web-ed »

An old standby of the "Behind in Jeopardy" situation involves pins and needles, so let's see some examples of them now. First up we have Candy, whom we saw recently with Corny getting butted by a billy goat. On the first page we have Corny touching her toes (which may be why I saved it), although no paddle-swat was applied as she deserved since on the second page she puts a pincushion on Candy's chair:

Image

Image
From Candy #17

This next one is from Junie Prom, which we don't remember very well. We have a pratfall followed by someone landing fanny-first on a cactus plant. Thanks to Bishop Berkley, a long-time fan of behinds in jeopardy and CSR contributor, for the scans here.

Image

Image
From Junie Prom #3 (Summer, 1948, scan from Bishop Berkley)

And finally, we have Katy Keene, who was always threatening to spank her sister (always referred to as "Sis" with no proper name) and sometimes did. Of course, I haven't presented those spankings on CSR because "Sis" is a child, but they're documented in the Comics Spanking Data Base for anyone who's interested. Unfortunately, there are no known spankings of Katy herself, but Sis does stick her with a couple of pins here and there are some nice pain stars:

Behinds in Jeopardy - from Arrows

Post by web-ed »

We've seen some behinds in jeopardy before due to toy arrows at least - I remember one from Patsy Walker - so here's the rest I've collected over the past few years. First up is one from Ozzie and Babs, which is a title we've seen here rather recently. We forget what the set-up is, other than a lovable moppet with a toy bow and arrow. "What a target to practice on!" he declares - and who are we to disagree?

Image
From Ozzie and Babs #1 (Dec. 1947)

Many people shoot themselves in the foot, figuratively speaking, but Veronica manages to literally shoot herself in the ass (nice job!) with an aerodynamically-unstable crooked arrow in an early issue of PEP comics, leaving Betty to remove it. Now, I've said this before and I'll say it again just in case we have any youngsters reading this (which I discourage): there's a big difference between toy arrows (and guns) and the real things, and the comic book writers of this period should have been more careful to specify the usage of the toy versions in these stories.

There is such a thing as artistic license, and this type of thing wouldn't be a problem if it weren't being read by children, although most kids understand the difference between cartoon and comic-book injuries and the real thing. It just makes sense not to take chances, and while realistically, Veronica is a legal adult and so old enough to be using real arrows, the Patsy Walker story had it right: use a kid with toy arrows for these gags, please!

Image
From PEP #68 (July 1948)

Finally, we go back five issues earlier to a Li'l Jinx story. Now, Li'l Jinx was spanked several times, and in fact she gets another one in this story, but she also manages to shoot not one but two violin teachers in the rear end with (thankfully) toy arrows. Three sore bottoms in one story - not bad! I'll try to remember to put this spanking in the DB for future reference, but of course we won't see it here because she's a child.

Image
Violin teacher #1 makes some noise thanks to a well-placed arrow from Li'l Jinx.

So another violin teacher must be found, and she turns out to be such a looker that Li'l Jinx's lustful father pretends that he's the one needing the lesson - and boy does he get one! This is kind of suggestive for a children's comic book when you come to think about it.

Image

However, Li'l Jinx gets wise to his scheme, and she's still got that toy boy and arrow, so...

Image
From PEP #63.

I love the "YEOW!" when that second arrow finds its mark (wish it was a paddle), driving the sexy teacher to leap into Dad's arms. Mom, however, isn't so thrilled, and crowns him with the violin, ending Li'l Jinx's violin career. Music's loss is our gain. :D

Lame Missed Opportunities - Part 1

Post by web-ed »

I'm getting near the end of my Missed Opportunities in Comics, at least for now, and honestly there's nothing to get that excited about here, but let's try not to feel too depressed about these examples from comics writers who really blew their chances to fit in some nice spanking scenes for us.

First up is story called "The Taming of Crystal," which basically begs (like Crystal herself) for a good spanking. Unfortunately, it never happens:

Image
From Glamorous Romances #82. JVJ, from whose collection this scan was made, thought the artist was someone named "Streeter". I didn't research it more fully since there is no actual spanking. :(

Next we have some disappointing sexual innuendo with "Because I Petted" from Love at First Sight #18 (November 1952). The truth is there wasn't very much in the way of petting in this story - not that we'd be too disappointed about that - it's the lack of spanking, perhaps as a punishment for going too far (which didn't happen anyway) that gets to us:

Image

The very next issue was an even bigger disappointment, with a story entitled "Spoiled Brat" which you'd think would have to lead to a spanking - but no:

Image
From Love at First Sight #19 (Jan. 1953). JVJ thought the artist was Ken Rice; if I knew who the writer was I'd send him a letter of complaint.

Finally we have a guy named "Mal Trent" - they should have called him "Mal Content" while they were at it - who seizes a brunette and actually tells her, "You've had a good spanking coming to you since you were a baby - you're a spoiled brat!" but doesn't actually give her one! How can you tell a girl she's a spoiled brat and that she has a spanking coming to her and then do nothing about it? Was the writer just too timid or was he under some kind of editorial pressure?

Image
From Lovelorn #35. :(

One Missed Opportunity, a Behind in Jeopardy, and an Off-Panel Spanking in Jungle Jim

Post by web-ed »

Our first example seems to be an altered but not official-alternative cover to an issue of Lady Death:

Image
This seems exceptionally silly even by behind-in-jeopardy standards. I mean, a fish biting her butt? I suppose someone might find it funny, but it's a long way from a spanking, and Lady Death, as silly a concept as she is, does make a good spankee.

Next we have an official-alternative cover, that is, something that was done by the original creators and actually published, although I forget what it was and it doesn't seem important enough for me to ransack my files for another copy that might have more information.
Image
This girl's position just cries out for a paddling - in fact I think they called it "Spank Me" - and there's a color version somewhere as well.

Finally, we have the long-awaited (it's been years) off-panel spanking from Jungle Jim, although Sweetspot may have posted a black & white version some time ago. I'm honestly too tired to check on that right now but I will later if I can remember. Here are my original notes from years ago:

"Jungle Jim (post-spanking shot, reported by Tanner and later discovered by Sweetspot to be from 01/07/1940). There also appears to have been a Jungle Jim radio episode titled “She Who Gets Spanked” from 1-06-1940."

Image
This was discovered by Andre at SPK. Some nice rubbing by our spankee, and of course anything by Alex Raymond is worth seeing, but obviously all of us devoutly wish the spanking had been visible.

I'm afraid I've never made any attempt to find that radio episode, although I could present the audio in the Video Section over on the main site if it ever did fall into my hands. Were there ever any on-panel spankings in Jungle Jim? The Comics Spanking Data Base doesn't record any, which doesn't mean that one doesn't exist somewhere, although it's hard for me to imagine it could have evaded Sweetspot.
