Well, we almost didn't make it this week, which would have been I believe the first time in our nearly 15 years on the web we missed a Friday update. More about that in a moment after we get to this week's update:

The Comic Strip Series continues with the second of a mini-series by Kevin Karstens and Bawdy Bard on Luann: Luann Spanked by Knute and Aaron.

We're sure getting off to a rough start in 2019: First, we have temporarily lost the invaluable services of Phil O. and Phil S. due to illness. (I don't think we've heard from Dan in a while either, but I checked a while back and found he had signed on to the board fairly recently). Then we had to complete the new galleries and the removal of the old Picture Gallery, a massive effort that prevented me from doing anything more interesting.

And then on Tuesday my fairly-new computer crashed. Of course as an old systems guy, I know the importance of backups, but most commercial programs seem to really stink! I thought the one I had was working, but it wasn't, at least not correctly, and I hadn't done a manual backup in weeks. Luckily, I was finally able to get a backup from Feb. 9th. Unfortunately, this week's update - Luann spanked by Knute and Aaron - had been done after that and I had to re-create it from scratch. I also had to fire up my old computer, load the Java Runtime Engine and Arachnophilia, and then without FTP I had to use a clumsier method to get the files online.

The moral: do not depend on backup software - there doesn't seem to be anyone who knows how to write good code any more, which really makes me mad since a lot of us good American System Analysts are still our of work - so do manual backups regularly (simple file copies).

Too sleepy to write (or complain) more, but I do expect to have another Luann cartoon next week, plus our first special of the year (which I completed early enough that it wasn't lost) on Novelty Paddles.

I completely agree with that. We don't want "Big Brother" closing you down.

And, for me, there is another reason. Even though I consider spankings (if they're done right) to be erotically stimulating... I prefer not to cross the line into something that would be considered "pornographic". The Overbarrel stuff is a great example of what I mean. We see pretty women turned bottom-side-up, and it's sexy. There's some dialog between his couples that indicates there will be other activities following the punishment... but we don't see those other activities.

It certainly was, Butch, and there are many sources that supply sex and spanking together today. I believe Shadow Lane does, although I haven't seen anything they've done the past few years. And other sites, including cartoon porn sites, do as well. No question that there's a demand for that sort of material. On the other hand, sites like Firm Hand, Girls Boarding School, and Real Spankings present spanking without sexual acts. The reasons I don't do so on CSR are twofold: (1) I don't really want to; and (2) Legal considerations. As (1) is an editorial judgment I don't think too much more needs to be said about it. I just never really liked hardcore porn that had no spanking in it, but exactly why that translated into not doing hardcore with spanking I don't even know myself!

Now on the legal front: here in the U.S. as far as I know the ruling precedent is still Miller vs. California (1973). In it, the Supreme Court enunciated a multi-pronged test for obscenity that is unfortunately rather subjective as well as rather humorously (for us spankos) known as the SLAPS test:

1. whether the average person, applying contemporary "community standards", would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;
2. whether the work depicts or describes, in an offensive way, sexual conduct or excretory functions, as specifically defined by applicable state law (the syllabus of the case mentions only sexual conduct, but excretory functions are explicitly mentioned on page 25 of the majority opinion); and
3. whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.

I won't give a detailed critique, but this standard is basically a mess ! However, notice that spanking does not satisfy the criterion given in part (2), which means that I should be safe as long as I present spanking only. What if I presented explicit sexual acts between adults? Then I'm at the mercy of a jury's guess about the "average man's" guess about what contemporary "community standards" are - now further complicated by the existence of the internet. Do Chicago's standards apply (I'd be pretty safe) or those of some other city and state? Who knows?

So with no sexual acts, CSR cannot be violating any state obscenity laws, and federal law has generally applied only to the mail (I discussed this at some length in the series on Nights of Horror a few years ago - see it in the Art Gallery). Indeed, properly construed the Constitution doesn't give Congress any power to enact a federal obscenity statute, but then again, Congress has no power to regulate firearms either, and that doesn't seem to be stopping them.

This isn't the ideal time to present the first of what I hope will be three or maybe four special features during this, CSR's 15th Anniversary. I haven't even had time to talk about where we are today and what I hope to accomplish during the year. However, we have to hope that our complement of stalwarts will be restored soon (that means that Phil O. and Phil S. return, for those who prefer to speak English ), and last week's computer disaster is no reason to postpone the "Novelty Paddles" article, which thankfully had already been backed up. So please enjoy "Novelty Paddles", and know that I have begun work on the "Bending Over" special as well, although when I can complete it is still unknown.

I'm still limping along this week with my old computer and no FTP software, but I won't say more until the misery is all over. The main thing is that CSR is still here, and so are we!

Yeah! This one is M/F OTK, the kind I really like! I don't know the Luann strip and its cast of characters, but Crystal is cute and her little bottom is just beginning to show a little pinkening! And both parties seem to be having fun!

I notice that this week Knute is using his left hand, even though last week's double panel showed him as the "righty". And about three weeks ago he was using his left hand. I wonder if the artists mirrored a picture by mistake, or if Knute is comfortable using either hand to spank a pretty young lady? (I'm mostly righthanded, but I can and do use my left hand on occasion.)

I remember seeing these for sale in mostly truckstops and roadside restaurants. Stuckey's was another chain that had them in almost every location.

Yes, there are many types of spanking, Butch, and certainly Flappers, Hippies, and Goths all need a good trip over someone's knee for disciplinary purposes ! But Bawdy Bard is a very firm believer in consensual spankings only so we'll enjoy his and Kevin Karstens' erotic humor knowing that other types of spanking will get their day soon.

Two weeks after the big computer crash, I got my PC back from the factory and it's up and running again, but there are still a lot of things to straighten out and the pain is far from over - I'm still without FTP, for instance, and have to upload files to the site by a far clunkier method. I think I lost some of the Golden Age comics I had downloaded to search so I'll have to recover them even though I'm really tired of reading through these Westerns that never seem to have any spankings. I may have a little more to say next week.

Anyway, for this week Aaron spanks Tiffany from the Luann comic strip as the Luann mini-series continues. Looks like we're concluding the mini-series next week as Luann's parents get into the act. But we've got plenty more comic strip material after that, so don't worry.

Yes it was, Willjohn, and boy am I embarrassed not to have caught this myself . I try to keep all of our 1500 pages or whatever we have now in my memory, but CSR is so large I often have to search for things to see if they're already posted or if they have some bearing on the current update. In this case, I was so tired and worried about file recovery (a last word about this next week) it was all I could do to get the update posted. But your memory is correct: back in 2009 I posted this Archie/Betty spanking in Comics Gallery 1:



I called it Betty Counts the Spanks and its gag resembles that of this week's Aaron spanks Tiffany in being based on the spankee miscounting the strokes:



Bawdy Bard does vary the gag, however, by having Betty miscount on purpose whereas it seems that Tiffany's brain is overtaxed by grade-school arithmetic. Good gag, and good catch!

A good gag is worth repeating.

I'm sure everyone is tired of hearing about my computer disaster of three weeks ago, but this is the last time it's going to be mentioned. There was something I held back just because I didn't want to give any of CSR's enemies - and I'm sure we have some - any ideas. (This board was wiped out on Christmas Eve a few years ago, but I restored it with a little help from B00m on some of the attachments). As I discussed previously, the real disaster was not that the computer failed but that the automatic back-ups hadn't been working correctly. A painstaking file-count revealed that the last such back up had saved all my documents except for one folder, which had been only partially preserved: the master folder that contains all of CSR!

We therefore faced two potential problems: (1) loss of new material; (2) loss of back-ups of the existing site, including files attached to this board (the board itself was secure because I take manual backups of it). I didn't mention #2 before now because I didn't want anyone to think this was the time to attack the site. As a matter of fact, we weren't as vulnerable as I had feared.

I had the foresight to take a manual backup (the only reliable way, I am now convinced) in January, so only files changed between then and about Feb. 11 were really in danger. Combining the Jan. backup with the incomplete one from Feb. left me with an almost-complete set of files. What to do about the ones still missing? Ah, but of course they were still available from the site itself. Therefore, all I had to do is reverse my usual process of uploading new files from my PC to the site to download the files from the site to my PC, which is relatively easy using FTP, the only danger being in replacing newer files with older ones.

Most of the errors I discovered were from years ago, where I had accidentally uploaded files to the wrong directory (where they do no harm, but also no good since there are no links to them). The rest were from January where I had been finishing work on the four new galleries. Had those been lost, I could still have re-constructed them from the old Picture Gallery, although it would have been a pain.

So at this point we're safe from attack. Someone could wipe out all of CSR and I'd be able to restore it in a few days. That leaves only the new material.

In theory, we could have lost everything from those last few weeks, but I hadn't really been gathering much during that time except for some new stuff from Doctor Cylon. (Since none of this material is on the site yet of course I can't do a "reverse back-up" from CSR itself as I did with the missing old material). The "New Material" folder still contains over 8000 files, so it looks like we're all right there as well.

Outside of all that, some Golden Age comics were lost, but I've now restored those also by similar means. I sure am tired of going though all those westerns, though!

How big is CSR all together including the new material? Nearly 32,000 files! Now you know why backups are so critical - and don't forget to make some of your own.

With my computer repaired and files finally restored, I'm back doing more regular work at CSR, including making a start on "A Tribute to Bending Over" which we'll probably see in April, possibly in two parts because I scrounged up so much material from my old tapes of Benny Hill. To get more caught up I'm going to take it easy with next week's update, which is a fairly tame one-whacker from Mary Worth. If I can manage it, I'll add something from Doctor Cylon as well. Work on the long-awaited (like many years!) "Who was the ACES Artist?" will have to wait but I really want to get it done some time this year.

There's still lots of comic-strip related material ahead, so stay tuned, everybody!
