The cover of Jo-Jo Comics #26 (April 1949)

Of course we all love jungle girls, and while we've never seen one get spanked in her own comic book we have seen at least one other female get the OTK treatment in jungle comics (spoiled heiress Doris Drake in Judy of the Jungle Spanking). Jungle boys have also provided us with some of these girl-spankings, particularly Kaanga, and we'll see another example now from Jo-Jo the Congo King even though it only features a villainess getting a light stroke across her butt from a whip - a very poor spanking implement.

Our story is called "The Weird Whispers of Death" and it happened in Jo-Jo Comics #26 (April 1949), published by Fox, an interesting house that featured a fair amount of Good Girl Art as we can see on the cover at left that left Jo-Jo's mate, Tanee, pretty much uncovered. Only two pages of this ten-page story need concern us.

It begins with the evil Tonka plotting against Jo-Jo and his people by giving him a love potion that overcomes his will and makes him forget his devoted mate Tanee (the reason for the similarity of names is not clear although a supporting character does mention it).

The evil Tonka seduces Jo-Jo using a love potion.

Fortunately, the wise old native chief realizes what's going on and comes up with a jungle antidote to Tonka's love philtre. Jo-Jo recovers his senses and confronts Tonka. For some reason, he refers to "[whipping her] into the jungle with the other beasts" perhaps to get rid of her. He then seemingly denies that he will allow his whip to make contact - "While I crack the whip after your departing figure" - but the artist drew actual whip-to-butt contact, complete with stinging effect lines!

Jo-Jo recovers and restores the status quo after giving Tonka a mild stroke across her behind with his whip. Posted by the Web-Ed on 10/15/2021.

Either the writer's original script was changed or else the artist got creative and decided the opportunity to give a bad girl the stinging behind she deserved was too good to be missed. It's hard to see why the writer's original script, if it contained the direction "Jo-Jo lays the end of his whip across Tonka's bottom," would have been rewritten since this was before the oh-so-sensitive Comics Code Authority started objecting to non-parental spankings, so perhaps we have the artist to thank for this scene as minimally satisfying as it is. Obviously a whip is not a good spanking implement because it's hard to control and normally far too severe for that purpose. In this case, Tonka is only getting the very tip, and where it won't do her any harm, so it's no big deal. It would have been interesting to see what punishment Jo-Jo's council would have imposed on her, but as she later tried to kill Tanee and then sank in a mire to her doom we'll never know.

Of course jungle comics are terribly politically incorrect by today's undiscerning standards, and in truth they did have some features we consider objectionable, mainly the rather needless killing of a lot of animals. But while they were somewhat paternalistic, with dark-skinned natives being wisely ruled by white men (Jo-Jo, Kaanga, Tarzan) and women (Sheena, Judy, etc.), notice that in this story it's the old black guy who saves the day. These Golden Age comics did deal in stereotypes but they were not racist - the unthinking accusation so recklessly hurled around nowadays.

Fox comics are still not completely documented to this day. Jo-Jo went on for three more issues (until #29), then the title was changed to "My Desire Intimate Confessions" with issue #31, issue #30 having mysteriously disappeared or, as we believe, never having been printed! We hope to yet uncover more of interest to CSR readers in the Fox line.
