Chicago Spanking Review

Mamie Spanking #1

---> Comics Gallery 2

It's great when we get to see a spanking in a famous comic strip, but our next example reminds us that's it's equally fun to find a spanking in a strip basically no one remembers. This one is called Mamie (1951-56), and its eponymous heroine is a very good age for spanking (we'd guess early 20s). CSR Chief Strip Researcher Sweetspot employs a method that finds both kinds of strips, and the scans here are due to him.

Sweetspot also found a a couple of missed opportunities, and while we usually present those in the CSR Forum, because Mamie is so unfamiliar we're going to see them here instead as a way of getting acquainted with the character.

"More forceful action" was required - yet our ape-man didn't spank Mamie! What a disappointment. Mamie September 30, 1951. Story and art by Russell Patterson. Scan by Sweetspot. © United Feature Syndicate.

This next example appears to show Mamie at work. When she insults a client, we expect the boss to spank her - if this were Suzie we could pretty well guarantee that outcome - but after saying, "I know what I'm going to do with you!" he does nothing. sad face

Mamie escapes spanking once again - drat! Fortunately, it's only for one day - September 30, 1951. Story and art by Russell Patterson. © United Feature Syndicate.

The spanking comes about as part of a routine gag we've seen several times in the past: grown-up child either says she's too old to be spanked, or that spanking is wrong, or (as here) that children should be raised by the methods of modern psychology; parent responds by spanking grown-up child. See e.g. Susie Q..

Cartoonist Russell Patterson came from a very strong fine arts background - McGill University, the Chicago Art Institute, and five years studying under Claude Monet in Paris! Of course, drawing and painting are two different things, and we're not sure how much Patterson's skill in oil painting helped him with his later work in the comics medium. Certainly Mamie has an interesting look to it; the closest strip to it that first came to mind was Don Flowers' Oh Diana. We thought we were going out on a limb with that statement, but then we checked Diana Dane Spanking #2 and found that our earlier research on Flowers had disclosed Patterson as one of his influences! (See the link for another example of Patterson's art). So we must be truly brilliant or else we just have a very good memory - either is equally possible.laughing face

The spanking panel is stylish and well-executed as we would expect it to be given Patterson's training. Certainly Mamie makes a pretty spankee, and it makes us wonder just how erotic a M/F scene from Patterson would be. He gives a nice long line to her buttocks here but the camera angle does not show them to their best advantage. As this episode came from the strip's first year (1951), it's possible that Mamie got spanked again in the next five years. We'll let you know if we find anything.
