#208 - Homer Birthday Spanking

For the fourth entry in our series on the work of Homer Provence, we have a genuine birthday spanking, which is somewhat unusual for a Humorama cartoon. (We infer the birthday spanking from the gift box on the floor.) A typical DeCarlo gag is to have an older man use this custom as an excuse to lecherously spank a shapely young woman, who is puzzled because it's not really her birthday. This girl, like most of Homer's spankees, is happy to receive the OTK treatment. In his later work they wore more subtle expressions of contentment than the enthusiastic grin we see here.

We believe this cartoon dates from 1958 and originally appeared in Comedy in September of that year. It was then reused in Joker (January 1967) before finally winding up in Gaze in April 1972. The original caption read "You guessed wrong! My birthday's tomorrow!" It was very slightly rewritten to read "You guessed wrong - my birthday's tomorrow!" for it's second appearance.

The OTK positioning is good, and with the knees bent as is typical for Homer. The spankee's bottom is raised a little higher than usual, which we like.

11/18/2011 update: We were finally able to obtain one of the three known appearances of this cartoon, the one from the January 1967 issue of Joker, and we present it now. Although it doesn't show more detail, it does preserve the caption: "You guessed wrong - my birthday is tomorrow!" Your birthday may be tomorrow, dear, but your spanking will be today!
