Having concluded our Bill Ward blowout, let's begin an eight-part series on the work of Homer Provence (1919 – 1975). Homer (as he signed his work) has appeared in this gallery before, and we'll have more to say about his style next time, but for now let's just take a look at this example from the December 1961 issue of Gee-Whiz. Unfortunately, this low-resolution scan is all we could find. It's hard to make out the caption, but it says something like, "I'm not punishing you for anything in particular, but things in general were so bad I just feel like giving you a few good whacks." This caption was almost certainly written by one of the Humorama editors, and as you can see, they didn't spend too much time thinking these things up. As a matter of fact, this sentiment is not typical of Homer, who generally didn't do punishment and discipline spankings, and we'll take up this point further next time. |
