"This will teach you to let my wife catch you sitting on my lap!" This cartoon may have been suggested to Bill Ward by the one he did in which the wife spanks the secretary. This time, the husband spanks the secretary for letting his wife catch them together - not entirely fair, but then, spanking is just one of the normal occupational hazards a secretary faces, the way a lineman has to worry about high-voltage wires. If you can't take the heat (on your seat), stay out of the office, as the old saying goes. Two odd things about this one are the positioning and the signature. Kneeling on hands and knees is a legitimate spanking position, although it works best with an implement other than the hand and some sort of padding should be supplied for the spankee's knees (she can sit upon it later). But why use it here instead of OTK? Then there's Ward's signature, which he did in white instead of the standard black. Since the drawing isn't so dark that a black signature wouldn't have been legible, and since this is the only time we've seen him use a white one, we're puzzled once again. The original publication date of this cartoon is not known but was probably somewhere between 1957 and 1962, with Mike picking up this reprinted version sometime in the mid to late '60's. [Later identified as the August 1965 issue of Laugh Digest - see below.] |

12/14/2012 Update: While we still don't know where this cartoon first appeared, we have now identified the source of Mike's copy (above) as the August 1965 issue of Laugh Digest, a different copy of which appears at left. This copy isn't superior in any way except that it is more complete, containing the torn-out section we didn't have before. |
