![]() The cover of Wham! (April, 1955) featuring Touring Tessie. Art by George Wolfe (click to increase in size). |
The April 1955 issue of Wham! is fairly remarkable in that the 20 or so pages devoted to Tessie (this was the amount of space allotted to each issue's mascot in the Wolf Books) contain not only this spanking but four other "Behind in Jeopardy" cartoons, three of which we'll see here, and one rather suggestive bending-over position! It all came about because the theme tying this issue's Tessie adventures together was "Tessie goes all out - on the farm". The first of these (below left) was an entirely silly gag involving a stove, while the second is more suggestive: with Tessie bending over and her head in a cow's stanchion, she's certainly in position for a good paddling, but another interpretation is possible and far less innocent. |

Tessie gets her fanny warmed, unfortunately not by spanking, and then bends over in the April 1955 issue of Wham!. Art by George Wolfe (click to increase in size).
In #3, Tessie gets her butt electrified in a variation of the old "bend over, get a swat" gag from burlesque.
No swat, unfortunately, but at least she's kneeling with her rear end up. #4 displays Tessie getting goosed, and by a
real goose, too! No doubt she now knows, as the farmer says, the difference between a duck and a goose!

![]() Tessie gets spanked behind the woodshed in the appropriately-named Wham! (April 1955). Art by George Wolfe. Discovered by the Web-Ed and posted on 10/20/2023 (click to increase in size). |
Having kept "the behind in mind" for so long already it was only natural that Wolfe should give us some kind of spanking cartoon, even a post-spanking scene in which he messes up his gag by adding the phrase "behind the woodshed" to the question "Did Junior show you where we used to chastise him?" The double-meaning of "where we used to chastise him," referring to both the woodshed (not behind it - another mistake) and Tessie's behind is thereby lost, since the physical location is specified. At least we have some "stinging effect" lines and good expressions on the faces of Tessie and Junior. An actual OTK (or bending over) spanking would have been a little surprising at this time (April 1955), since only two OTK spankings had taken place in humor cartoons up to that time, the second just barely before (Secretary #A5), and Wolfe likely hadn't seen either of them, so we can't complain too much about not having one here. Still, since Wham! was published at least into 1957, by which time the "spanker" was in full flower at Humorama, it is a little disappointing that no on-camera spankings of Tessie are known at this time. We'll keep looking. |
