#25 - Bongo Spanking

It's possible that Jack O'Brien didn't think too much of the Beat Movement - he was, after all, a member of the "Greatest Generation" and had been a Technical Sergeant during World War II (probably in Special Services, although we couldn't confirm that). Our beatnik-spanker here lives in a dump, hangs psychedelic art on the wall, and of course plays the bongo drums. That brings us to the bongo-style spanking gag, which we've seen before in Humorama #146 and Humorama #150. As a gag it's passable, but it has the great drawback of a positioning that is more humorous than practical - or sexy. Not that this would bother our spanker here as he looks too stoned to notice. As for the spankee, she certainly deserves to be spanked for her bad grammar if nothing else ("broken" is correct as it is the past participle, not "broke").

We've seen O'Brien's spanking work before in this gallery. He did three "spankers" for Humorama between 1957 and 1960, although none of them were bongo-style. He's a solid if unspectacular artist who started doing humor cartoons in the 1940s and enjoyed a long career in comics as well. This cartoon dates from late 1968, and we could not ascertain whether O'Brien was still working on Sad Sack for Harvey at this time. He may have needed more work or may simply have decided to keep his hand in with humor cartoons, which by that time he could have been doing for almost thirty years (assuming he labored continuously in that medium). We wouldn't be surprised if there were still another O'Brien spanking cartoon out there, and we will be presenting some "Behind in Jeopardy" and "Innuendo" material of his in the future.
