Alas, we can't blame the Comics Code Authority for those "Patsy Walker Family" spankings where all we get to see is the aftermath of the actual spanking with Patsy/Hedy/Nancy having a pillow strapped to their behinds because they took place in 1946 (Nancy and Patsy) and 1952 (Hedy and Patsy again) before the CCA came into existence in 1954. Also, the Code never really squawked about parental spankings, and there were some of those even during the "Dead Zone" of 1956-1965. (I have one more "pillow scene," with Millie the Model no less(!), although it's due to a well-placed golf ball rather than a spanking, and it's from the same period (1947). We'll see it here on the forum in a few weeks).

It's true that comics were under fire starting around 1947, but the real problem here is that the pillow-strapped-to-behind was a humorous shorthand, much like a character rubbing her behind while pain stars emanate from the affected region, and it was well-suited to the comics medium. It has the benefit of dramatic concision but at a great cost in eroticism and dramatic intensity (compare to Spirit/Ellen or Phantom/Queen Para, both of which basically sizzle with erotic overtones). Obviously there's no eroticism with the parental spankings the Code people (Mrs. Trulock) didn't seem to care about, but there is some dramatic intensity in them (for example, the two on-panel spankings of Hedy Wolfe and two of Candy O'Connor, both by their respective fathers).

• Doctor Cylon continues his series on Jessica Rabbit by revisiting Doctor Cylon #159 with fourteen additional versions of a Julius Zimmerman classic!
  
  For the most part, I try to do new pages in Doc's gallery because there's so much material and doing so adds to CSR's already-enormous page count, and yet a goodly portion of that material consists of additional versions of drawings I posted years ago when I did not have the additional versions available to me. In this case, the 14 additional versions weren't doing anyone any good just sitting around in the Jessica Rabbit Folder so it was high time to post them. I hadn't realized that Zimmerman's original had Jessica baring her bottom to receive a shot, but once I saw the extra version there was no doubt and I dug up the original black & white version as well. The Good Doctor must have been quite inspired by the raw material to do so many versions.
• We conclude our Patsy Walker Series with Hedy Wolfe bending over for a switching!
  
  I've had this one in the file for several years - someone posted it without identification - but it was only recently I identified it as coming from Patsy Walker #62. As I'll explain in detail next week, this scene follows a definite and familiar pattern I have decided to call the "penance spanking" - actually requested by the spankee! We have seen one of these already, namely Venus #2, and we have something very similar to both that we just posted over in "Missed Opportunities," where Hedy requests a swift kick. Also, I've included a complete checklist of all 11 of the "Patsy Walker Family" spankings, most of them in Patsy Walker but because the character was so popular and appeared in so many places the spankings were kind of spread out, also. Note that quite an interval of time was covered, from the first spanking in 1946 to Patsy getting the cane across her behind from the super-villain Lunatik in 1979 - a span of 33 years! Any further P.W. spankings will be added to this list but I think I've got most of her appearances covered, now.

It might've been better if a boy had been holding the switch... but I think the writers, artists, and publishers of the comic were trying to avoid potential erotic overtones.

One of the techniques used by statists to control what adults can read and see is to pretend that it's all "for the sake of the children". We are told that we must censor books, movies, music, television, etc. to "protect the children". But censorship attempts in most of these media until recently when a different technique started to be used (nominally private companies like Google, Facebook, Youtube, and most especially Twitter imposing censorship at the behest of the federal government) never got very far because it was generally understood that the federal government had no authority to censor anything except what was sent through the U.S. mails and because these were recognized as adult media. State censorship is a different matter, but at least the courts have up until now imposed some limits (although not enough) on what may be censored by state authorities.

The problem with comics in America as opposed to, say, Europe and Japan, is that comics here have always been considered a children's medium, and that was even more true in the 1950s than it is today. That left the medium open to attack on the grounds that it was harmful to children, and such attacks began around 1947 by Dr. Fredric Wertham and others. To be honest, pre-Code horror comics with their incredible amounts of blood and gore were reprehensible in my view, but I doubt very much they were responsible for turning children into juvenile delinquents. They were the principle object of Wertham's rage (and to him, even superhero comics were "horror comics"), but he had a secondary target, and that was sex.

We don't need to go into every aspect of sex Wertham found objectionable - he hated "headlight" comics in which women were drawn with prominent "headlights" as some boys called them (one wonders if he thought every woman should be drawn with an AA-cup sized bosom) - but unfortunately for us, he specifically mentioned spanking in his notorious Seduction of the Innocent, referring to it as "sexual flagellation upon the buttocks". Comics were, then, under fire, with a Senate sub-committee even holding hearings, and despite Congress having no authority to censor them, the publishers, who were for the most part a disreputable and cowardly bunch, feared government censorship and decided to head off that possibility by censoring themselves with the Comics Code Authority in 1954.

For the first two years, the spankings continued, but once Mrs. Guy Percy Trulock and her "Code Ladies" took charge in 1956 they apparently took Wertham's "sexual flagellation upon the buttocks" very seriously, and I believe there was only one non-parental, non-robot adult M/F spanking during the following decade (in Career Girl Romances #45). About two years ago, I went through something like 600 romance comics from the "dead decade" and came up with no spankings! And notice that this week's Nancy/Hedy spanking, which isn't even M/F, took place in 1956 just before the "dead decade" really went into effect, and there were no spankings in Patsy Walker after that. It wasn't until 1966 that the dam was broken and the spankings resumed, and not until 2011 that the Code was finally laid to rest.

  Interestingly, it appears from our research that one form of abuse sometimes visited upon the poor guy or gal while in the stocks was a good paddling! That may explain Jessica's red bottom here, although Doctor Cylon certainly had something to do with it also.
• We continue our exploration of Marvel's Golden Age Books with the longest-running of them and an office spanking in Millie the Model!
  
  Millie was the longest-running of Marvel's Golden Age career girl books, and so far no actual spanking of Millie herself is known, but this one of Chili is good fun. Also, it strongly implies that Stan Lee scripted the other four known very similar spankings (and one booting) in other titles. Are there more? I really don't know at this point, but my Golden Age Marvel Search continues.
  
  With Millie's success, Marvel launched two similar titles, Nellie the Nurse and Tessie the Typist. No spankings for Nellie as far as I know, and I think I've got all her appearances covered, but Tessie did receive an off-panel spanking once and we'll see her with the classic pillow strapped to her sore behind here on the forum next week.
• Resident Artist Hugob00m continues a CSR tradition with a new O. T. Katie strip featuring Romantic Spanking Month Part 2, in which Kaylyn and Jack prepare for their wedding "down under". If you've never seen a "publicity spanking" before, you will when you check this one out!
• We found a very similar scene to the one from Millie in Teen Comics #31. Unfortunately, it's F/M so we're not going to provide a direct link here. Anyone interested can easily find it at the bottom of Comics Gallery 2 or get the link from the Comics Spanking Data Base. This one is pretty bad - Georgie was a rotten character to begin with, and Marvel kept changing him perhaps because they couldn't understand why readers didn't respond to him. (Their real Archie-imitator was Willie who was none too interesting either and whose only known spanking was of some kid ).

Julius Zimmerman included an occasional actual spanking among his many drawings that because they featured a female bare bottom were ideal for being transformed into post-spanking pieces by Doctor Cylon's coloring. We have one of these this week with Baby Herman turning a pleased-looking Jessica over his knee, which of course just made things that much easier for the Good Doctor. The animated version he did is great fun, and Jessica is a great spankee! There's more of Zimmerman's Jessica in the files but we decided to move on for now.

We have featured some of Al Jaffee's early work on Patsy Walker recently, and that reminded me I'd never posted a spanking cartoon he did in 1982 for MAD magazine that's been in my basement ever since. I scanned it a few years ago but never got around to posting it, so now seemed like a good time. On a trivial note, the reason I post the few spankings from MAD we have in Comics Gallery 2 instead of in Newspapers and Magazines is that MAD began its life as a four-color comic book before becoming a B & W magazine after the Code was implemented.

True, Katie isn't the bride this week, but when we ask ourselves whether she should be paddled anyway, our answer is a heartfelt "Yes!". We don't expect to hear much in the way of protests on this point.

I think I've posted all the Golden Age Marvel stuff I currently have in the files, and if there's anything else we'll see it soon. Of course my search continues, and I expect something interesting will turn up sooner or later, but as far as Millie the Model is concerned, I've now reached the Silver Age in her main title and would be surprised to find another spanking. The first decade of the Silver Age is a spanking dead-zone as I've mentioned many times before, and if we needed any further discouragement I found it recently when Stan Lee recycled the spanking story from Millie #27 - but with no spanking!

You remember the plot: a man shows up at the Hanover Agency and, believing him to be a client, Chili exaggerates her success and paints Millie as being practically broke with no modeling assignments. Turns out the man is from the IRS and he announces his intention to send Chili a big income tax bill, but instead of requesting a paddling from Daisy as before the final panel simply shows Chili alone in the office and fit to be tied. I have to suspect that Lee would have repeated the "penance spanking" bit had it not been for pressure from the Code Ladies. No doubt word had gotten out that Mrs. Trulock and her crusading women took a dim view of non-parental spanking. (Remember that Lee had repeated the spanking story from Western Life Romances #2 in My Own Romance #24, but that was in 1952 before the Code).

For tradition's sake, Katie bent over to be paddled, even though she hasn't actually been a bitchy bossy mother of the bride, not like we have seen at some weddings. She's such a good sport!

Doc Cylon's new Princess Peach series will go on for five weeks with the final episode featuring a special guest princess, Princess Daphne. (The reason for this is that I didn't know who Daphne was when I was sorting through Doc's material and threw her in with Princess Peach. Hope she doesn't mind. ). We'll need something after that to get us to Super-Spanking Summer, but what that is I have no idea yet. There's certainly plenty to choose from in all the Doctor Cylon folders! True, and why PP was princess of a mushroom kingdom of all things - she was even known as "Princess Toadstool" outside Japan - I have no idea. That's what happens when you're not into video games - you don't even recognize characters who are familiar to kids today.

In all the years I've worked on computers and even built one myself going back to 1986 when Microsoft Windows technically existed, but I had no GUI and had to use command prompts to start my application programs for things like numerical analysis, I've never played a video game on one of them! I played a few video games in arcades in the early 80s but simply lost interest in them. "You play until you lose" as Harlan Ellison wrote in a column around that time.

I don't regret it. In the time I've saved, I've written a lot of stuff on word processors, including fiction that's been ignored and political writing that has appeared on the internet (not under my "Web-Ed" moniker, obviously), and of course written many hundreds of spanking web pages with a specialized text editor. So now instead of reflecting on time wasted playing video games until I lost, I can gaze over CSR's more than 1500 pages (I need to do a new census this year to get a more exact number) and this board with a certain amount of satisfaction.
