Chicago Spanking Review

Patsy Walker #7

---> Comics Gallery 2

We have remarked elsewhere that as far as we know, no jungle girl (Sheena, etc.) was ever spanked in her own comic book. The heroines of teen-age humor comics were not so lucky, as we saw with PEP #59, Suzie #83, and Suzie After Spanking, and although Patsy Walker was generally well-behaved she was not immune to parental spanking as we'll see now. Once again we believe it was Robin who brought this one to our attention - thanks, Robin!

In this story, which comes from Patsy Walker #7 (October 1946), Mr. Walker believes that Patsy should learn to drive. Alas, Patsy isn't as helpful as he thought she would be, as he finds out when he calls home to have Mrs. Walker tell Patsy to come pick him up so he can listen to the football game (not watch, since there's no television yet!):

Patsy picks up her friends and they all go out for something to eat, while Mr. Walker fumes - uh-oh! Note that some wag, probably Stan Lee himself, decided that Mr. Walker's first name should be "Stanley". © Marvel Characters Inc.

Patsy remembers about her father and the football game, but too late - he's already called Mrs. Walker and told her to bring him Patsy's bike. Then they get sideswiped - by Patsy! - as they're pedaling home. It will soon be "paddling" instead of "pedaling" in the Walker household... © Marvel Characters Inc.

In contrast to the usual pillow-strapped-on-sore-fanny visual gag, Patsy is holding her pillow in position for some reason, but there is no doubt she was well and truly spanked by her father.

Sharp-eyed readers may notice that the art in this issue looks a little different than it did in issue #3. We noted there that we believed the artistic team was Chris Rule and George Klein. This is mostly based on the statement by Al Jaffee as noted by Nick Caputo that Rule was the regular artist on Patsy Walker until Jaffee took over the reins in issue #5. Jaffee may have inked his own pencils here or may have been inked by Klein.

Amazingly, Al Jaffee is still alive at the time of this writing (Sept. 2022), 76 years after writing and drawing this issue and now aged 101! He is best known for his work on MAD magazine, to which he contributed for 65 years(!), only retiring from that publication in 2020. He was probably following some model drawings, perhaps Chris Rule's, when doing this issue since his own distinct style is completely submerged.
