Secretaries get spanked for many reasons in Humorama cartoons, but this is only the second instance we can recall in which bad dictation was the cause. Actually, in the other example, Dan DeCarlo's "Older secretary wonders why younger one gets spanked", "bad dictation" is the phony rationale which allows the boss to do exactly what he wants to - smack a young woman's shapely rear end - and who can blame him? That's the difference between DeCarlo and George Morrice, who generally gives us as a genuine disciplinary spanking in which the humor derives from the spankee's discomfiture, as is the case here. This cartoon was published a month before DeCarlo's, by the way. It appears the secretary didn't do things the boss's way - tsk, tsk. A spanking resulted, and we'll bet she's going to change her tune before long! No OTK positioning here, and no cami-knickers either - there's a half-slip, as there sometimes was in Morrice's cartoons. Her right leg looks awkward, and her bottom is not very well-defined (largely because of said half-slip), so it occurred to us to wonder if this might have been one of Morrice's first efforts, but several other "spankers" of his had been published earlier the same year (1956). Not Morrice's best, but we never saw a secretary spanking cartoon we didn't like. |
